Here is a quote from the man that can :y

Quote
Just to clarify, all full Facelift and all minifacelift (ie, solid head restraints, audio steering wheel controls, clear headlights) 4 speed autos can have the autobox firmware updated.

If you are still not sure if your PREFACELIFT is a minifacelift or not, check the last LETTER of your VIN. If its a W, X, or Y, it is updatable.  If its R, S, T, or V, it is NOT updatable.

..........................and what does the update actually make the gearbox do differently ?

It makes the changes smoother and the box locks up in top gear more readily. It is a more comfortable drive, but doesn't do much for the fuel consumption. Unfortunately, I don't have any data pre upgrade, but I would say that comsumption seems to be slightly higher since I had the upgrade done, especially when towing.

Don't know about MPG, but even the wife commented that the car drives much smoother after I had the upgrade done. In fact, it was so bad beforehand that I actually took the car to Vx complaining about clucky and rough gear changes, they said they 'checked the fluid level' and 'found nothing wrong with the transmission Sir'.  On the plus side, they didn't charge me extra for it.... I strongly recommend you get it done.

I was thinking about having it done but now I'm wondering if its already been upgraded. Having had the dis pack and leads replaced the gearchange has gone back to being smooth as silk, amazing the effect a dodgy dis pack has on everything.

I had mine upgraded this week by Mark the Genius and I can confirm that it does make a considerable difference to the gear changes. I didn't think it was bad before, but it is so much better now.

Would like to get mine done aswell as my VIN number starts with a W so assume it is doable ?does anybody with these magic machines(tech2) live in Kent or the S/E as bit of a slap up to the Midlands for the work

Any takers ??

There are only 2 'magic machines' here, One in Brackley, the other Nottingham.

If thats too far, you either have to go to a meet where one of the above is attending, or fork out dealer prices, in which case ring ALL your local dealers, as when I did, had over £50 price variations!

Thanks Jimbob..when you say price variations ??lowest ------highest..as cost of fuel to Midlands might out weigh stealers price..just be curios to know what they charge

I had mine done by a dealer  :-[

Highest quote was £88.25!
I paid £35!

Have never heard of another dealer being that cheap though.
The harder part was 3 dealers didn't know how or refused to try!

All that said, I would rather have Mark or Jaime do it, as you can trust them!  They will also look for anything else that may want / need doing which Vauxhall wont!
Things like Climate panel, radio's, Instrument panel can all be updated, if they are checked out.
Amazing to watch in the right persons hands.
There are also a few privately owned ones local to me, its shameful to watch them try anything, they just seem frightened of them.

Just had my gearbox and climate control updated by a person who works for the local stealer, and does after work jobs in his mates garage ( who used to work for the same stealer for more than 30 years before going independent ). He "borrows" the Tech 2 plus his laptop from work, charged me £25, plus he checked the engine electics but that was up to date. When he first checked the gearbox, the Tech 2 found 5 faults, after updating from what I believe was version 3 software to version 8, all was well.
After the updates, the only fault thrown up was a bulb on the dash for exhaust emission had blown or removed. I'm very pleased with the work done and more so the cost. One happy bunny.

Is it possible to reprogram the gearbox, so that sports mode is actually sporty. For example, it doesnt launch until 4000 rpm in 1st, so I could hold it lightly on the footbrake and smoke the tyres. And no, I'm not normally a hooligan, but sometimes it's just nice to make Saxo driving boy racers jaws drop, as something the weight and size of the QE2 screws them off the lights....

I hope you mean ver 9 or later?

Can you ask him what version of TIS (the release date) he was using?
