Title: Steering Just doesnt feel right
Post by: bigdods on 20 December 2007, 16:16:34
My steering just doesnt feel very well connected to whats going on - my old 2.5CDX was much better. The symptoms - well if I am going down a straight road (say a motorway) I am constantly making small corrections. Nothing major but every few seconds I have to adjust the wheel by a few degrees. WHen going round bends it feels like its going to run wide, so I correct, then its too tight so I correct back then it starts going wide..etc. etc.. Feels like I am going round the bend in series of small turns instead of one smooth movement. Recently had both front lower wishbones replaced but that hasnt made any difference.

What should I try next ?

Cheers

Dodsy

Firstly check for any play in the rest of the system - steering idler arm and anti roll bar drop links seem to be favourite and if that's Ok iI suggest a trip to Wheels In Motion to get the geometry set up properly.

Are you getting any uneven tyre wear?

I'm getting uneven wear on the rears but not the fronts, so I'm already planning a visit to WIM for a full 4 wheel setup but this doesnt feel like a Geo problem. Steering idler sounds likely have to check that and the ARB's out, just trying to avoid spending silly money when its only an annoyance at the moment.... but then again these things have a habit of turning from annoyance into failure quickly dont they !

Yep.  ::)

If all else fails, there's a post on here somewhere regarding adjusting play out of the steering box. IIRC, there's a small grub screw with a lock nut on it on top of the steering box. If you unscrew the lock nut while holding the grub screw still then tighten the grub screw ever so slightly it is supposed to adjust out play in the box. Confirm it's the steering box first, though, because you don't want to adjust it too tight and knacker it.
