Title: My idle problem - returning fault code
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 23 December 2007, 16:10:47
I'm not sure if this gives any indication of what my idle problem could be.

Today I cleared out the codes with Kevin's cheapo Tech2. Ran the engine on PETROL only, and checked again.

Fault code 57 (Idle air control voltage low) keeps reappearing. I tried a few times. Sometimes it only appears on the laptop with the engine running. I have already changed the ICV with no joy.

Any ideas please? :)

Problem with air RAMS  :-?

problem is, this will effect LPG idle much worser

I've checked v thoroughly for air leaks etc - there are none.

Multirams would effect performance, but I'm not sure about idle?

I have also problem with idle for long and its intermittent..Changed everything (also new ICV ) except MAF, Air Temp sensor and Multirams..

I give order for a new MAF and Air temp sensor ..Will come within 10 days..I will report the result here..

Have you tried following the diagnostic in that program that no one has, it could help  :y

Click on the C-30 it will take you thro checking procedure  :y

Oooooo I will look at that tomorrow.

I'm using Mr DTM's re-programmed software , it's Very good  ::)  :-X

The code is pointing at the icv....

...or the wiring to it.  Possibly an intermittent short to another wire?

Given that I've changed the ICV for a known good from another car, I guess wiring is likely to be suspect also.

Anyone know what pins on the ECU I should continuity test to?

Check Haynes - the wiring diag will cover your engine loom

Electronics not my strong point, but I'll have a look. Cheers TB :)

Interestinly, it's begaving fine since I put half a tank in from another garage. Makes me wonder..  ::)

Ultimately, I think I may need to speak nicely to someone with a real Tech2 and go for a live data run ;)

Really fed up now. This morning it was almost perfect on changeover to gas - and then with no warning at all it cut out on me when dipping the clutch, approaching a roundabout.

It's one of those annoying faults - I wish I could get to the bottom of it

I can't really help mate as i don't know much about gas really other than it's cheaper then petrol lol...

Is it possible to get contaminated gas like u can with other fuels eg. water in diesel or water in petrol will make a car stop maybe theres a iffy bit of gas in your tank, cant u drain it  :o and refil with new gas or is that attempting fate...  ::)

Have you connected a vac gauge up to test for vac leaks.....

also, trace the ICV wies through the loom to the ECU checking for breaks.

Not yet mark, where would one buy a Vac gauge on Christmas eve?  ::)

is there any link for this kind of vacuum gauges ..Or all can do the same ?

You've got one built into your LPG system :y

It was showing about 0.3 bar absolute fully warmed up when we set it up, IIRC.

The code seems to point to a dodgy ICV circuit, which would certainly explain the symptoms.

You could always rip out the fart juice system and run it on proper fuel....

A typical good engine vaccum should be 20 Ins Hg......which is about -700mB...........

And a vaccum gauge should be available from any good car shop.....i.e. the Gunsons Lo-Gauge.

Its also possibly one of my most used diag tools as it gives a good quick relaible indication of the engine condition.....and helps to diag faults in the vac accuated components to.

That ties in with what the LPG system was reading when it was working OK. 300mb absolute = 700mb of vacuum. So, has it changed (when hot - it won't be asm much when cold)?

Its likely to be slightly more (or vice versa if working off absolute) when warm than when cold as engine vaccum should be better.
