hi guys :)
hope your all having a nice xmas...and Happy new Yr ;D
noticed on one of the posts a comment,
"Not sure why you have the impression that the 2.5 is unreliable, they should be as robust at the 3.0. Often an oil cooler failure is mis diagnosed as a head gasket failure: that could be why lots of people are after relacement engines. "
this opened my eyes a bit as i have a recently " dead" :( 1995 2.5 v6 omega cdx sitting outside my flat, local garage put a tester on it and told me it needs head gasket replaced or new engine, £600 + or £1000 if all goes well...i was gutted..only bought her in may this yr and paid £1200 cos in nice condition, i was tempted to spend the £600 and get her back on the rd,but my woman convinced me to buy another car and sell omega on as scrap or spares, I've held out on selling my lovely omega for a month but dont know how much longer I can hold out, lol..the problem is who can you trust and is it really head gasket ? Help !! ( guys Im driving a citroen est now, so you can see why I need help please )

We need some more info on the symptoms please
Is there sludge in the dipstick?
Mayo in the coolant tank?
What does it run like?
What sort of "tester" did they use? Compression tester, or emissions snifer in header tank?
While it happens, HG failure is rare and is commonly mis diagnosed, so it's definately worth checking out to be 100% sure.
Even if it is the head gaskets, it's not a difficult DIY job, and costs about £50 for a gasket set, + bits and bobs. £600 is OTT.

Hi JamesV6CDX
thx very much for reply...
car still ran a few weeks ago, but a small pipe burst at the top back of engine and coolent was every where,I was having coolent probs and used radiator fix a few days before, gonna have a "look see" about questions as my memory is real bad
:-[
brb...

ermm...battery flat..gonna buy some jumpers and get her running, but the oil on the stick is clear and no gloop on the cap or in the radiator reservoir..saying that she's been off rd for a few weeks so could things have settled ? dont know what type of tester was used but I will find out asap..

It sounds like it could be as simple as a heater bypass valve failure, causing the coolant to over pressurise!
Flush out the coolant system, check out the HBV and see what happens! Could also be a blocked rad, ESPECIALLY if you have put radweld rubbish in there :'(
-
Water from the back will most likely be the Heater Bypass Valve...

Also with you using this radiator fix, its well worth flushing out the coolant and replacing with fresh once you change the HBV.

He did say it was a pipe split...

hi again ;D
well bought a pucker powerpack..jumper..light..etc from halfords and me Omega started 1st time ;D ..ran her up to temp about 90 deg still no gloop any where apart from the leak from the back and a water low warning but its defo' a pipe. garage who advised about the head gasket etc still closed but it is boxing day, thx for advice so far guys I will get hold of a HBV and flush out as advised. link how to do it usefull thx 8-)Will update as soon as this stuff done, dont know when yet as the handbag has a list lol...What ever happens guys thx for the help and thx for a good forum, dunno what we would do without you guys :y
Have a good new yr

Remember that if you get air in the coolant system it WILL over pressurise............and a when a coling system cools down and the coolant contract.....it draws air IN
-
sounds to me like the heater valve, if it was the oil cooler then the header tank would be full of oil...
Change that valve bud bring her back to life.... :y :y :y
-
Thx 4 advice guys ....working on it ;D

It's been a long few days...

could be such a simple fix, just think how gutted you would be if you scrapped it to then find out it might have just been a £50 valve.... >:(

HI guys..
stripped down to get old HDV off as suspect I have a split pipe too and didnt want to make 2 trips to Vauhall dealer ( £33 inc vat for valve by the way )and found this ....gloop...could this be the radiator fix gunge or is it down to the final resting place for me old Omega :'( looks like the whole valve is filled with it. Obviously havent flushed anything out yet but is it worth going further ?

OIL cooler failure deffo, not terminal but more involved. will require flushing with forte system cleaner or low foam detergent and oil cooler change.NOT HEAD GASKET.
-
That pipe looks too small to off the HBV. It looks like breather size in that picture.
Which pipe is it?
-
hi guys thx for looking and replying again :y
the pipe is the top one of two from the left hand side of the HBV .. this was the 1st 1 i took off, awkward to say the least, there is one pipe below it and another on the other side that seems to go to an ally unit on the off side wing..there are 2 pipes from this unit and the other 1 goes to the HBV as well if i remember correctly? anyway, do I need to get a new oil cooler or is a 2nd hand 1 ok , what sort of price am I looking at any idea pls ?
might be able to do it saturday if I can get the part and cleaner etc..thx again

I should check which pipes you really are looking at.
With that level of contamination in a coolant line your header tank would be encrusted with emulsified oil.
Does the coolant header look badly contaminated?

Hi Mike..
Im sure its the HBV pipe that Im looking at..re the maintenance guide on the link earlier in this post thats deffo the guy Im working on..not too sure if the header tank was contaminated as there isnt and hasnt been any water in there since I parked it up a couple of weeks ago, do you think there is another problem or the head gasket really has gone? Im willing to wait while you guys debate or if theres more info you need or pics I can get etc no problem, as time allows..theres no great rush car is off the road but taxed till May 08, so your help is appreciated.
-
If the picture is of the HBV which has got the three pipes as you describe (looks a bit like the starship enterprise) I would say that the oil cooler requires replacing and I would only use a new one and not second hand.
-
I'm with the oil cooler vote .. :)
Friend of mine was told head gasket £1800 on his 01 2.6 ... I went by what the forum generally says .. ie .. head gaskets rarely go ... we flushed the system very thoroughly, ran it .. sure more oil but it did NOT pressurise .. then he told his garage ( I don't live close enough or have the expertise ) to change the oil cooler .. so they did ....£480 later his car runs as well as ever :)

Maybe take off another coolant pipe, top hose say. If that is as bad then you have bad oil contamination of the cooling system, oil cooler is a likely candidate.
It may be a distortion of the photograph, but I still think that pipe is small for HBV. What is its ID?
