Hello and a big welcome :y :)

Firstly, sounds like you don't have the noise any more.  Great, but can you check when the cambelt/tensioners were last changed - that is most important and should have been done every 40k (or 4 years if sooner).    Worst case your noise is a tensioner about to go.

Next,  are you losing oil?  Try pulling a plug lead (front left is easiest) and have a look down there.   If you see oil it is likely that your cam cover gaskets have gone.  Have a look in the maintenance guide section for guides for replacement and also breather cleaning.

The exhaust manifold is very hot - suggest you don't touch it to find out ;)

welcome to the forum,

As has alreadt been said the service interval on a cambelt is 40,000 or 4 years, if these go then it is bye bye engine

the rubbing noise could have been a number of things, i would be inclined to check the idler pulley, this is mounted top left hand pulley as you re stood looking at the engine from the front.
if this goes then it can snap the aux belt, this can be ingested into the cambelt and the belt slips and then the valves make contact with the pistons.
Easiest way to check is to pop the aux belt off and spin the pully, is there freeplay or dies it feel very rough sounding, another check people do is to pop the belt off and then run the engine for a few mins to see if the noise goes away

hope that helps
