Title: COOLANT PROBLEM!!!!...HELP
Post by: MikeDundee on 23 December 2007, 11:37:22
Check coolant came on last nit on the MID, so about half hour ago checked the tank and it was empty, nipped down to the garage and bought some Comma coolant to top it up with, topped it up to the level, I have just been for a short run up to peckham, less than 2 mile round trip, now got steam coming from the engine bay, looks like something is leaked from underneath the engine but can't see where it is coming from.

Find it unusual that after getting it back after lamda's getting done yesterday I have no coolant left :-/

Could there be an air lock in the system???

Some pics:

Mike you know the HBV is the Heater Bypass Valve

I think its scuttle off on a V6 to get easy access

some V6 person will be along to tell you where it is

;D, scuttle?, I assume at the back of the engine adjacent window wipers?

HBV is on the bulk head behind the cylinder heads right above were your leak is coming from if your loosing that much coolant should be obvious anough if its leaking and unless you have arms like match sticks you`ll need to take the scuttle panel off and have a decent pair of pliers its abit fidderly but straight forward anough.

The valve it's self has prob packed up mate, just remove the scuttle pannel and have a look and see if it's leaking.. might be the valve or might be a hose..
Take a look when the panels are removed...

i too have coolant leak on 2.0 16v 1996 loses about 1-2 lts of coolant after 5-10 miles or so with bonnet closed steam seems to be coming from the drivers side front where expansion bottle sits, when releasing the cap seems to be a lot of pressure no sludge or mayo on engine filler cap or dipstick  :-?

Will have to check the how too, as I can't see a bl**dy thing at the back, and theres even more coolant on the deck outside now, and the expansion tank is almost empty.

On the 2.0 4 pot it also has a HBV it on the drivers side but if your getting it from around the header tank check yours is not split they can split check this first before you check your HBV as you can see water dripping from the bottom back part of the engine if its the HBV
Title: Re: COOLANT PROBLEM!!!!...HELP
Post by: ELITE-3.0-V6 on 23 December 2007, 13:18:52
My guess is its that valve or a hose near it.. once that panel is removed u get alot more view..

If u pop the 2 wiper arm caps off and undo the 13mm nut both arms come off, then there a small torx screw in the top right hand corner remove that then gently work the whole panel out..
Once this is removed you get a lot more room round the back of the v6 lump...

Its not a difficult job Mike, our Tony did mine. It's awkward to access and those bloody spring hose clips make it more of a pain. Just remember to get the hoses on the right way or your heater won't work as Bobo & Timbuk will tell you.

Mike, once you have the scuttle panel off you are plain sailing mate... I used a pair of mole grips to grip and hold the clips while you wriggle them up the hose away from the HBV. Then a screw driver I also used to break the seal the hose had on the HBV.
Think I paid around £25 for mine from Vauxhall..

Cheers Daz; I have a pair of clip pliers, but they're no good due to the position of the clips, so will be long nose pliers and now a pair of mole grips (Pink) ;D

Well got the HBV from Vx this morning, and bought a pair of small mole grips out the local place £8.00 f*ckin quid :o, same as the large ones, so unless it seriously rains on Bx day, job will get done, also Vx bloke said only need 3litres of coolant, as per what his mechanics told him, anyway bought another 2 litres just to have some spare ;)

And no I have'nt gopt a pair of those thingy maejigs ::)

Well the job got done yesterday, I had a go, but just could'nt get the grips into release the clips :(, so it was call Razzo who kindly came down yesterday morning (top man :y), However, in between me calling Razzo at around 9a.m., one of my guests got up around 9.40 a.m. came out an had a look and got the job done (he is a mechanic :-[), did'nt take him too long, ended up with a few scars. Anyway job done no more leaks, interestingly enough the old HBV has no signs of say cracks in the plastic, so how do these manage to fail, something pack up inside?

Glad you got it fixed mate, they do do a tool to anable the removal of those clips by just sliding the end over and squeezing the handle...

Erm, I would hazard a guess that the 'pliers' are supposed to move the remote bit, not vice versa.  :y

Thats exactly what it does do, I just tried it on a clip on the car, for the life of me just can't see how it actually works, better of with a pair of mole grips :-/

The best solution I have found is a pair of small mole grips (although mine are not pink ;))

I did buy some hose clip pliers but they don't help much as the real problems arise where access is difficult.

Thing to be careful of is that there are several different types of 'hose clips' - eg the ones on the breather hoses would need a completely different type of pliers to the HBV ones, so need to buy the right ones..
