Title: Omega Windscreens?
Post by: Wayne on 23 December 2007, 23:28:25
Guys - as you all know what car i have

does my model of car come with a quick clear windscreen?
it dont appear to have as it takes ages!

my brother met me at the M4 Services last night as we headed off in our van to do a gig
we both came back 14 hours later and both our cars windscreens looked like the Antarctic
his windscreen cleared in about 6-7 minutes!
none of us had any bloody de-icer at the time
he drove off laughing as i sat there with me heater on
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr    >:(

he has an S Registration Ford Mondeo 2.0i Ghia X Estate
his has a quick clear windscreen! Aarrgghhh

obviously we argued about the fact that mines faster! ha ha
and i got heated seats and climate and all the gadgets  ;D

dont think mine has a quick clear? or should it?
maybe a previous owner just got standard one fitted as it was too expensive?
if so, i would like to replace it at some stage

thoughts?   :-?

To the best of my knowledge Vx don't do a quick clear ..  the Ford system is bloody brilliant .. its the only thing I miss from the Granada ... I know its darned expensive .. a new windscreen cost an arm and a leg .. luckily an insurance claim... not mine either !

You are quite correct. No Vauxhall has a heated front screen - contrary to eBay sellers!  :o  :y

Please don't take this the wrong way, but what made you think that you might have a quickclear screen?  After all , you haven't got the switch on the dashboard to switch it on, like your brother has presumably got?  Or was he trying to wind you up???

think he was winding me up

i presumed that my car done it automatically, after all the CDX has pretty much every other gadget on it, so WHY not Quick Clear windscreen?

looks like i was wrong..

still annoying when he drove off after such little time!!

Yes some Fords do.........if you look closely at his windscreen you will see fine heater wires in it.....wrecks havoc with bolt on sat navs, you need an external aerial for them.

It is a good idea and can't understand why more manufactures dont use it. I had an old 1993 Range Rover that had one and it was the best :)

so are the heater fans under the screen the closest we have? i didnt realise there were actual properly heated screens, with the fine element running through them!

mine's not always the fastest to clear but i always allow plenty of time to clear it before i go anywhere

i also dont bother with de-icer on the screen, because although it states "prevents re-freeze to -40c" or whatever, it's complete b******s! (and it leaves the glass greasy and full of residue once it warms) so i just scrape as much as i can and let the heat from within the car keep it melted and clear

If Omega's had the quick clear off a mondeo....I wouldnt own one!

Despise them!

Yes, great for clearing the screen, but I can barely see through them, the wires 'catch my eyes' all the time, and even worse when turned on, I hate them, they distort everything  ::)

No Omega has quick clear screen - Ford are pretty much the one mainstream maker that do.  It has a disadvantage at night due to the extra glare caused by the wires in the screen.

Fords have them, cause their ventilation is poor, ever noticed all the old Mondeo's get really steamed up very quickly? it was to combat that....

I hate the quick clear windscreens....there bloody dangerous for two reasons...

1) They act as a grating when the sun is on the screen and distract your vision (makes them tiring to)

2) You need more than your windscreen clear to drive safely....you need your rear screen AND your side windows...

HiAll

I understand the pros and cons of the quickclear windscreens, but on balance, I think I would be just in favour.

I had one on a Granada that I owned for 4 yrs...I can tell you, when I had to use it,  I really appreciated it, and there's no temptation to drive off thinking " that's just clear enough for me to drive off now" when it's not really. Also, once you've cleared a normal screen by scraping or de-icer, on really cold days it can re-freeze after half a minute - never had that on the Granada, which, incidentally was made in 1987 which was before Mondeos were around, I think, so I don't think it was due to bad ventilation as suggested previously.

Happy Christmas

I agree with last post - I had heated front windscreen on granadas from 1985 to 2001 when changed to Omega. I think the system is patented by Ford and that is why it does not appear on VX etc. It is a major benefit - the Omega is a pain for defrosting but I am happy to have changed for the other aspects of Omega which I enjoy for 95% or so of ice free days.

I changed my wife's car from Focus to Sgnum diesel and I get the same complaint about de icing - she thinks Signum is otherwise a brilliant car.

Using the full air-con/climate system (Pressing 'Auto') should stop the inside from misting up and make it clear much faster.

The trouble with that is that air-con/climate disables when temperatures outside the car are below 5 degrees. Cant understand why cos it is a very useful way of limiting condensation on the windows.

AFAIK the CC does not "disable" as in "not work" ... all that happens is the COLD side of the AC will not function, the warm side still works great, and the air is "dried" as it comes in, so you get lots of warm dry air blown at high speed towards the windscreen ... demists very quickly on mine. Pressing the demist button makes the fan run at high speed and overrides the temp selection - well on mine it does - to give the result mentioned.

So .. CC on auto 23   degrees at all times, just hit demist switch for 10 minutes first thing, then return to auto .. :)

I know that if enough of us are intrested in a "Fine Wire Windscreen" there is some one I know that can do them, but we are not talking just a few, we are talking 50 -100 people min order to make it happen

Ford patented the quick clear system back in the late 80s when they developed it so it is only found on Ford or makes own by Ford, e.g. Jaguar. I never found the wires a distraction at night and I have owned a few Fords. I would own one now if they made a 3.0 automatic but sadly they dont. I like the Omega, but having to scrap the windscreen in the mornings is so annoying and frustrating.

No need to scrap it. Just clear the ice off and it will be as good as new.  :y ;)

Just make sure you have pressed the windscreen clear button to speed things up otherwise it will take an *age* to clear, especially as the climate on auto wont pump air through until the engine is warm (2 mins or so) if you dont press it !

Not sure at this moment in time, I'm waiting for an email back, to found out how many orders I will need to make it happen, as soon as I know I will do a  post, so I can see if any owners are interested in a new fine wire heated front screen, just like the old Dagenham Dustbins  ;D ;D  :y
