Title: Warped Brake Discs Vs Steering Idler Arm
Post by: tunnie on 08 January 2008, 20:29:49
How do you tell them apart?

I get wheel wobble, not vibration under heavy/moderate braking. Only affects 65mph down to 55mph ish... when braking from 80.

It does not always do it, softer breaking from say 70, and no wobble...

No other vibration or wobble at lower speeds, even braking hard. Same with say breaking from 90-70, no wobble.

I fitted brand new GM discs and pads 2 years ago. Millage is now 106k

Hi, You can check the steering idler arm for wear, jack NSF wheel up, and rock your wheel @ 10 - 4 if the idler arm is worrn you will notice the movement in it.

However it could also be:
Worn insides on tyres
Wishbone bushes.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be all of the above.

Thanks

Mine could also be the bushes... wishbones have never been changed under my ownership (4 years & 25k)

Do you mean face the wheel and push it side to side with hands at 10 to 4 ?  :-/

You may want to get someone else to look at the idler while your doing it as it is kinda tricky to do it and see at the same time.

I have what I would describe as vibration, not wobble, when braking at motorway speeds. I bought two new wishbones and will be replacing them soon, will let you know if it helped with my problem...

Cheers, my millage is low currently but would like to get it sorted,  car feels ballanced under braking, but wheel 'wobble' is not good.

Its hard to describe, its not vibration (very small movements) ie ballancing out and going 85/90 and getting vibration though the wheel, its different to that.

The steering wheel does 'wobble' side to side.

Markjay,
Vibration against wobble could be warped discs, Does the vibration get softer the slower you are under braking?

Tunnie, on uneven road do you get tramlining?
If so its 99% sure to be the wishbones and inner tyre wear.

Pulls to one side.... i think i have.... not really sure.  :-[

Tyres are excellent, very even ware on all of them. Not the most grippy tyres in the world, but the ware has been excellent, i have done 25k, and still have 6mm on the back!

Those tyres may as well be made of plastic for all the good they are.

Let me know if you want me to take it for a thrashing spin...

I find them perfect for my level of skill, comming back from Bicester if the road is to myself i never dip below 80 on the corners. As far as i am concered they are fanastic for my level of experiance and competance behind the wheel....

Its a case of elimination then i think, cheapest first.
I spent all day today in the soaking rain  :( replacing most of the steering, tracking and most of suspension components to get rid of the problem.

Drives like a dream now though ;D

Quite the opposite, I found them to snap out without warning...

When braking relatively hard, i.e. not panic stop but like you slow down for a speed camera, form around 70 to around 50, there is a noticeable 'knocking' felt on the steering wheel, like you were holding an air tool... it is also felt on the auto gear shift stick. but oddly if you look at the steering wheel it does not seem to move at all.

Had this before, changed front bearings (which needed doing anyway) and front discs, was fine for a couple of months but now came back....

I am reluctant to change the discs again after only a few months (they are Vx so should be good), so I'll be changing the wishbones next and will take it from there... I will also ask Tony @ WIM to have a look at the suspension and see if he can spot any other failed bushes drop links etc (even though car MOTed fine).
