Title: Knocking from suspension
Post by: Neil_MV6 on 08 January 2008, 14:06:24
I've had new tyres fitted to my 2002 MV6.  Since then there's an annoying knocking from the front drivers side wheel area.

Even over very smooth surfaces and at low and motorway speeds, the knocking seems to be the same and can be felt through the pedals and slightly through the steering wheel, like a vibrating type of knock but very apparent.

I've had the car on ramps and have grabbed and shaken every possible suspension component I can see, and have even stood on the sill bouncing the car, but cannot get it to knock this way, only when the car's in motion.

The only slight play I can find in any suspension part is the thin wertical 10-12" rod behind the front shock which appears to be attached to the end of the anti roll bar (don't know what it's called?).  There is slight vertical play in this if I push it very hard.  I would imagine that is from wear...it's just strange how it came on all of a sudden after the tyres were changed.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Neil

That is probably where the noise is coming from, its a drop link and they do wear and knock. They cost about £20ish for two off ebay and are very easy to fit :y

That 'rod' you describe sounds like the droplink. Easy to replace and cost around £12ish each....

(beaten to it....lol)

Thanks guys.  I dont have a Haines, so quick question:

Is the drop link fixed under tension by the anti roll bar?  I dont want to undo it and then find it impossible to re-fit.

Is the suspension on my 2002 model the same as can be found in the pre facelift Haines workshop manuals?

It's probably pretty similar. There's nothing fancy there, just one nut on either end. The drop link will be under tension if you jack one wheel up, the solution is to also jack up the other side to the same height (basically so the wheel is just off the ground) and there will be no torsion on the roll bar and thus no tension on the drop link.

Very easy job, as long as the nuts haven't seized.

the only problem i had when i did mine the other day was that the nuts were really tight. it took me about an hour and half to do the both links.

pretty straight forward though.

I saw them jack it up at the correct point using an air jack, first time I've seen one of these used.

Thanks for all the feedback and the links, the job seems fairly straightforward...I will report back.

Cheers
