within eyesight of my house the engine temp red light came on so i switched off the engine an coasted home and let the beast cool down, some water came out the expansion cap but only a cup full id say.
i started it again and a few hours later and warmed it up, the engine started and was running fine with no bubbles or oil coming through the coolant with the cap off. i switched the cabin heat up full and no heat when there should be. the temp kept rising so i switched off the engine.
theres no coolant leaks so could it be the water pump impeller has shed a few blades and not circulating coolant or am i in bigger trouble?? :'( :-[ :'( :-[ :'( :-[ :'( :-[ :'( :-[

Its reasonably common for the water pump to throw blades on this lump......so start here.

And be aware, like most BMW engines, the heads are prone to cracking/warping through overheating, so don't let it go above 100C on the gauge...

its gone to the local grease monkey to diagnose for me. It was hot for only a very short period, fingers crossed its ok or its back to the vectra again

Pressure test, or check for fumes in coolant...

ill tell him to pressure test it, no fumes in the coolant so im half way there :y :y, any difficulty doing a pressure test on the lump???? or is it over complicated like it usually is

if not fumes in coolant, I'd simply see how it goes.....

god bless the monkey, he said the water pump was shredded and a part of the impellor had lodged in the thermostat and damaged it aswell. :-[ :-[
