quite entertaining trying to keep the hose I was using off the hot exhaust I seem to recall :(

You don't mention the changing gear bit while topping up Mark .  How necessary is that to get the level correct?

Not important of just topping up (as the galleries should already be full).....more essential when doing a change.

The guide is for topping up so in that case the box should already be primed. If you are changing the fluid completely (ie. dropping the sumps and cleaning / replacing the filter) then it is necesary to engage each gear to allow the fluid to flow.

EDIT... I wish I could type faster!

thanks - I'll be checking it again when I next do an oil change.

..maybe worth a comment on the guide as I am sure many people use this when doing an ATF change..?

Also, a 500cc syringe with a long tube might help, both to empty the main sump before dropping it (to minimise spillage), and also for topping-up afterwards....
