My 2.5cdx auto, bought last month with 138k on the clock. Have done 300 miles and today has come the first problem.
Auto box starting to make some loud clunking noises. Acceleration from still became very slow, but managed to get up to speed and drove the 20 miles home (could not tell if I was in 3rd or 4th gear though). There was a definite burning smell and by the time I got home there was a strong smell of gas in the car. 'Check Auto gearbox' was now being displayed on the screen.
Took her out a couple of hours later for a spin, all seemed well, no error messages but could still smell gas.
When I bought the car with it was a receipt from a garage from September that said 'put in 3 litres of gearbox oil and hardly any came out'. I guess this could be significent.
What do you think I could be looking at here?
Thanks.

Recheck the level as a first...
-
I shall indeed to be doing this first, but am concerned that as it had 3 litres put in it 2 months ago, if it is low again then there is a major problem? Also, before all this happened there was a whining sound on acceleration (not present at idle), plus some vibrtion from the gear stick.
-
Just spoke with a auto box specialist. Explained how the problem is there when hot, and not cold, and he said it probably isn't low-oil related and given the mileage (138k) the box is probably knackered. Taking it in tomorrow for proper diagnosis. Quoted over a grand for a re-build which I would not be interested in, would prefer to risk it with a second hand replacement.

Had a serviced today with new oil and a computer test which brought up a couple of errors. Oil was burnt and was leaking into the sump. Replaced oil and gasket but was told no guarantees.
Drove it home, after about a mile it started clunking, slipping and then wouldn't get out of first gear. Problem is worse than when I took it in. Had to drive it home at 4000rpm in first doing 25mph along a B-road for five miles.
Having shelved out £145 for this, am not too happy at all. Gearbox is obvioulsy knackered. Any advice here please!

if you see burnt atf, the box has had it.
get a know good one, around £100, and about a day to fit...

£100 from where? I can't fit them myself!

people who break cars on here. or ebay.

Would an autobox from a 3 litre fit my 2.5?
-
Yep.....slightly longer ratio but, nothing to worry about.

They are not at all difficult to fit...

Yep, fiddly, awkward, and heavy :)

Very easy with proper car lift :'(

Have just wacked out loads £££ to get a used auto box put into my Omega. Similar problems exists - seems to start off in 3rd gear (selecting 1st gear and she pulls away quicker). There's a smell of burning gas but so far no slipping or clunking. ECU showing check gearbox. Was guaranteed the box was a good one and my mechanic reckons it needs a good run to clear away any damp or crap that was in it. Could he be right or is the box another duff one?
Am feeling sooo peeved now, my first Omega experience is turning into a nightmare.
-
What about the transmission control module?
-
Pardon my ignorrance, what would that do?
Also, Sport mode cannot be selected and the oil (4.7L) was fed in through the breather valve via a pipe - is that ok?
-
Have had the filter and selector switch cleaned but same problems exist. Where do I go from here?
-
Hi
I would suggest before forking out any more on guesswork have fault codes read and take it from there.
John
-
4.7L - that's nothing like enough....
should take at least 7L I would say and possibly more if it was completely drained.
The correct method is to fill through the sump plug WITH THE ENGINE RUNNING (makes a huge difference), until fluid runs out.
So I would get it topped up..
-
Would the fault codes pick up on low oil?

Not necessarilly but will show up if problem is something else.

If it won't go into sport mode then is it stuck in winter mode? Only time i've ever known a box to pull off in third.
-
I don't know if its in winter mode as the button does not light up when its on. At the moment it is displaying both SAFE and AUTOMATIC GEARBOX on the screen. When driving, there are no clunks or slips which still gives me hope the box might be ok.
I got my mechanic to check the oil the proper way through the sump by adding some more and he reckons it was spot on. I still think it might by low though, so I'm going to have one last throw of the dice and add more oil through the breather pipe via a tube that has been left in. I know its not the right way, but I'm not giving anyone else a penny as I've spent enough. If that doesn't work that I will push it off a cliff.

There's a level plug on the drivers side of the box you unbolt the plug and, with the car level and the engine running, top up the level with a squeezy bottle/pipe, while doing this someone needs to engage each gear in turn for 10 or so seconds.
-
Whereabouts are you?

Unless the engine is asking it to reduce power (have you paperclipped it), looking like new box isn't good :(

I know that's the proper way, but I presume there is no access if the car is not jacked up? Also, I believe the paperclip test does not show up gearbox faults? I'm in Essex.
-
The problem is that if that plug isn't open you can't tell that you've got the right level of fluid in there. It could already be over filled.
Marks guide may help you here:-

As TB says, reading the codes using the paperclip test would also help diagnose issues further.

[I believe the paperclip test does not show up gearbox faults? I'm in Essex.
Will display Engine ECU codes but it may be that it's something to do with the engine that is causing the box to throw a error.

correct

OK, will do the paperclip test tomorrow. Where can I find a page with the fault codes? Thanks.

few codes in the tech info section, else just post up and we'll tell you :)
-
OK, done the paperclip test - only getting code 73, which is the air flow sensor I think? What does that mean? Any relation to the gearbox?

I don't think that would cause a gearbox limp...
-
Well, I'm currently ading 2 litres of ATF through the breather pipe which is taking ages, I know its not the right way to do it but what the hell.

Trouble is, you'll never get level anywhere near close...
Is it leaking then?
-
No, its not leaking, I just wanted to add some oil and see what happens. Took 4 hours to add 2l through the breather pipe. Haven't test driven it yet but going through the gears no change apparent so far, though it now does take longer for AUTOMATIC GEARBOX to flash up. Will test drive it tomorrow, if its still playing up can anyone recommend a decent cliff to push it off?
To add add to my woes, got a letter from DVLA informing me the tax, which was due to expire 09/08, was in fact invalid as the previous owner's cheque did not cash and after three months of trying to get hold of the bastard without success, have now burdened me with it. I was going to send it back for a refund for the remaining months if no joy with the gearbox but now I have to pay back-dated road tax from 10/07 for a car that has barely been on the road since I bought it in November. More expense on a car I know I should never have bought in the first place, £1200 for the car, £600 for various automatic gearbox solutions that have not worked, £400 on insurance and now frigging road tax - that was my only hope of getting something back from.
-
Is the box slipping for about 10 - 20s before AUTOMATIC GEARBOX error?
-
I won't know until I test drive it.
-
but before you topped it up
-
No, it wasn't slipping at all, just always pulled away in 3/4th gear.

Even when just started?

Yes.
-
Yes.
Hmmm, sounds electrical then.
Does msg fire up before starting, or after starting...
-
Pretty sure before firing as well, leave it ten seconds or so. Have had the selector switch cleaned. Will go and check now.
-
OK, when ignition is on (car not started) CHECK appears after about 10 seconds. As soon as I press the break and lift the gearbox selector AUTOMATIC GEARBOX comes up. So does this mean it is electrical?

Certainly worth getting gearbox codes read to see what gearbox ecu thinks is wrong
-
i fitted mine in my driveway ,just me and my little trolley jack.i wouldnt reccomend it though as it fell off the jack and landed on my hand! (still got a bit of a scar 18 months later) but if you can get a mate(or wife!)to help you should think about having a go at it. it isnt technically difficult, just awkward and you would save a lot of money in labour costs
-
I had it scanned but it didn't seem to want to know. Bloke said it probably has something to do with the wiring loom so I'll get that checked out too.

What tool did they use - some generic tools can't read gearbox
-
It was a Vauxhall TechII.

What was the error that tech2 came up with for not reading it?
-
I don't know, he said at first there were a coupe of errors then it stoppped responding, through with it all really now. Can't be arsed to spent anymore time or money on it to be honest. What would it be worth as scrap?

Virtually nothing I'm afraid.
