hello have started to get a slight mis fire out of my 01 mv6 it only happens on very light throttle and when you nail it it goes as normal, last week i changed the plugs and checked the plug wells they are bone dry and the leads look as new no eml on and never has ( other than when starting engine) the car has only 42000 miles on it and it is serviced every 5000 miles , so where do i look next any ideas would be apprecaited thanks in advance

I wonder if there's an EGR issue?
Failing that, a dodgey coil pack? Is there any missfire under engine load?
-
it is misfiring only on light throttle and i think it is misfiring when in neutral at 1000-2500 revs but only very slightly the car is up for mot in the new year and a misfire will almost certainly fail the emissions and also is not good for the cats so it needs fixed asap but it is not a easily noticed when driving
-
I would go with coil pack your symptoms were exactly the same as mine on my v6. :(
-
thanks for the replys but is there anything else to look at before i hand over my hard earned cash what about the suggested EGR how would i check if this is the problem or not
-
You could try blanking off the EGR valve with a metal plate under it and see if that improves matters, or clean it out.

also i have noticed that the car does hunt a little bit on idle if that helps any, any more suggestions much appreciated

I would be inclined to block egr with a bit of coke can, if that doesn't help, look for possible air leaks...
-
thanks for the advice will do that and see what happens and will post back the out come :y
-
ok blocked off EGR but still missing also looked for any air leaks but so far can find no sign of any ( removed the wiper panel off for a better view) but every thing looks ok any more ideas, tried to look as dispack but it is a real b*t*h to even see as you all know all to well as for removal ::)
-
Start with the obvious stuff first....make sure the spark plugs are correctly torqued down and that there are no vac leaks.
Also chack the leads.
-
new plugs fitted last week and did,t help so that rules them out as for the leads they all look as good as new, as for air leaks have listened and had a good look but as yet everything looks as it should is there any vacum pipes that are likely culprits that are not easily spotted from just looking?

Same symptoms as I had a few weeks back. Turned out water had got into the dis pack and corroded two of the terminals and the HT lead ends as well. Looking at the state of it I cant fathom how the thing ever ran at all but until it started major misfire the only symptom was a variable tickover. New dis pack and leads and shes running very sweetly now, no tickover problems no misfires and the power I didnt know i was missing has returned.
It is a pain getting to the dis pack and cables but it sounds most likely - but you may be lucky if its only a slight misfire might just be corrosion where some water has got in to one of the connectors you may be able to clean it out ( I am not a mechanic so someone will probably come along and tell you why this isnt a good idea). I initially thought mine would clean up but it was just too far gone. But then my misfire was 2 cylinders at anything under about 3k revs so it was undriveable
-
this is a old post but my omega is still misfiring i took a real good look today and removed all the plug leads and checked the dis pack for any corrosion or signs of damp but there is not any they look as good as new and took a real good look for any air leaks and the only one i found was a pipe that goes from the heater matrix to the pollen filter ( broken of at the pollen filter end ) i don,t think this will be any thing to do will the misfire and will be a real pain to repair, what is this pipe for and what effect will it have on my car i would prosume the climate control, anybody think of any thing i have missed to do will the misfire or this vacum pipe ( by the way it seems to be sucking air if this helps )
-
Try blocking that pipe with a suitable sized bolt and jubilee clip, making sure you are past the broken bit ... see if it fixes the problem. This is an old fashioned way of tracing vac leaks but it still works :)
-
thanks for the reply will try that and see but i don,t think it will effect the running of the car but you never no, i am running out of ideas and the car is up for mot real soon and is almost certainly going to fail the emmissions test
-
Well if it is always sucking air it counts as a vac leak, and the vac system is pretty complicated, vac leaks cause poor running ..... so worth a try .. what is there to lose ?? :)
-
ok my omega is still misfiring but today it got really bad as in almost undriveable, it is not to bad under very light throttle but any more and it spluters and misfires really bad any ideas? as this is a old thread i don,t want to go over everything again but to update the EML is still not on, the car starts ok, idles ok , under very light throttle ok , under very heavy throttle mising really bad , any help much appreciated
-
Could it be fuel starvation under load. ?Blocked/restricted fuel filter?
Only check is to replace, I think but worth trying.
-
could be right easy to change so will try it just to rule it out thanks
-
any other ideas? please :(
-
Makes me think of MAF sensor or TPS but either of those would raise a fault code. (have you checked for codes, and that the light is working?)
Clogged air filter?
Failing that maybe the coil pack.
Kevin
-
thanks for reply the air filter is not dirty and the eml is working as it should , the coil pack looks as good as new as do the leads no rust or corrosion , i have not had the codes read as the light goes off as expected and does not come on again ,
-
just totally removed the dis pac what a c**t of a job and guess what corrorded at the bottom fairly badly i had only looked at the plug connections and they where perfect but this is definatly my problem as all you guys had said it sounds like so have ordered a new one off ebay should be here tommorrow, all being well this will sort out this depressing problem thanks for all the help will post back the rusults asap
-
