alternator goosed on my motor [not charging ] can i get at it from the top ? and how is the belt tensioned ? can you give us a clue ,
cheers paul

TIS says out from top. Its wrong, you can't (unless my alternator is different).
Out through front, but ideally you need to remove rad, possibly A/C pipe.
To release tension on belt (once all viscous fan etc off), remove all top engine plastics (need to to get viscous off anyway). See bolt through top of tensioner damper? And the black metal plate? Molegrips on black plastic plate, undo and remove bolt through top of damper, then pivot black plate on remaining bolt. TIS's method, and BMW's method of a pry bar often ends up with a broken tensioner.

is there 2 bolts that hold the alternator on ? and what sort of time will it take me . thanks for the help so far . paul

yes, 2 nuts and bolts hold it on. wiring is 2 connections.
How long depends on your abilities, and how easy that stupid viscous fan comes off ;)

good ability ,is the viscous fan a left handed thread? also while i ve got this lot off temp gauge does not work is the sender unit on the rad? cheers much appreciated paul .

viccy is lh thread
both ecu and dash temp sensors in head - easily seen once intake off. from memory, dash one is near cylinder 2, eng one cylinder 4. clips used mean they dont just fall off normally.
about 3hrs if rad has to come out, possibly about 1.5hrs otherwise
