Title: Need brake disc...trade discounts? Buy just one?
Post by: alanfp on 17 January 2008, 20:22:21
Due to my car having been "pre-abused" rather than "pre-loved" I need one rear disc, but Vaux will only sell me a pair (£94 + VAT).

Does anyone know the sort of price I should be paying for one?

Halfords quoted £85 for one - or £15 with a Halfords trade card.  When I went back with my trade card, turned out to be £64!  I guess the first guy read the wrong line on his screen ::)

I'm also tempted to order new ones off fleabay - seem to be £45 inc P&P for 2 discs and 4 pads. Sounds good - is there a catch? Anyone tried this route?

Any pointers would be gratefully received........

It is adviseable and safer to replace both rear disc's and pads not just one. You will better off buying genuine Vx discs and pads as a kit form, thats rear discs and pads for one price.

Buy discs and pads new and as a pair.  Gen VX is regarded here as the best, particularly if you have access to trade Club prices, which is round about £58 plus VAT for solids, pads about a tenner plus VAT.  get pattern hand brake shoes though.  Chances are at least one will brake apart when trying to remove the disc, especially if the discs have done loads of miles and have a large wear ridge.

Pattern discs from factors tend to warp, moreso on the front, but for the difference in cost may be a better investment for gen VX....

i have killed a set of aftermarket spec discs in less than 25,000 miles, i drive a lot but i don't drive hard.

this time round i will buy vauxhall discs and pads.

buying one could end up with you having a brake imbalance, this will get picked up on MOT, replacing the other side at that point may not cure the issue as there will be a difference in wear and so you may have to buy another pair.....

........

Anything to do with suspension & brakes should be done on both sides of the car.

Thanks, guys - I know I SHOULD replace both, but I'm trying to save time AND money at the moment.  The previous owner must have just replaced one side some time before I bought the car  ::)

I don't have a Vauxhall trade club - how do I go about getting one? I assume this will give me a discount at the stealer? (Obviously I'd be happier with genuine VX parts).

Replace BOTH.

Save money on brakes is never a good idea!! Save money by having a value sandwich instead of finest, or by having less drink on a friday night.

But don't skimp where money needs to be spent!

I had a soft tyre once on my Carlton - slow puncture, did an emeregency stop and it spun around.

THis could happen with mismatched discs

Message received loud and clear  :y will do both.

Having viewed the 'how to' link - am I right in thinking it's just friction that holds the pins in place?  (and that funny black split collar at the end of the pin).  If so , could they ever work their way out (towards the middle of the car)?

It's just 'friction' that holds them via that 'funny black split collar' but they will only come out FROM the middle of the car ie outwards. You'll see when you get one out.
