Title: R.I.P my omega
Post by: garyv6 on 19 January 2008, 14:56:18
hello all! went to do an oil change today and found lots and lots of mayo in the filler cap and a slight trace in the dipstick! i think its safe to say my head gasket has gone and theres no way i could afford to get that done! its off to the scrappy i think! :'( :'( :'( :'(

dont do it just yet, get it to the garage, they can put their tester in the header tank, if the blue solution turns yellow its gasket failure, if its not, it may be worth saving from the scrappy. might be worth a check, ive had it done 3 times on various cars & never been charged more than a tenner!

Is the car only being used for short journeys and is it using any water?

It should be a 50/50 mix with Anti-freeze, and that should be in all year around.

If its neat water in there, thats the reason its failed!

It costs £15 for 5L of Anti-freeze that lasts for 5 years!

did you see any coolant trace under the car where you park ?

right mayo on the cap does not mean its HG, if its used on short runs only a considerable amount can build up.

Water loss could be the HBV.

As stated, check for leaks under the car and around the HBV area

Try following the flowchart and take it from there....

that is exactly the same symptoms as mine (apart from i have no mayo on dipstick), its very confusing took it to the garage, they done the head gasket test and said its fine, they said it dosent seem like oil cooler but when it does go i will know because oil will be in header tank, he said just keep an eye on it, stop the car if the engine gets too hot, and shouldnt have any problems. I cant see any trace of water underneath the car, and he checked the viscosity of the oil and said it was fine!

I know this is off topic, but will this flow chart apply to a 2.0l or would it be slightly different??

the rough running sounds very like the usual omega problem of oil leaking from the cam covers into the spark plug wells which causes the plugs to short out and after a while damages the ht leads and then the dis unit.as for the mayo,i did an oil change on my 2.5 recently and found loads of mayo in the filler neck(lots of short journeys),i was also slowly losing coolant , which was solved by changing the heater bypass valve,so i  think you should definetely get a good mechanic to do the test for head gasket failure before having an omega funeral.if the gaskets are o.k. the other problems arent that difficult to solve if you just pick them off one at a time, and speaking from my own recent experience , there is a lot of satisfaction to be gained from getting the car sorted and running sweetly when you were close to sending it down the scrappy.  :y

thanks for that albitz! i was at the point of the scrappy but i will defo give that a go! :y how much does it cost for the heater bypass valve to get done?

the valve is just over £30 from vaux, there is a replacement guide on here, not a tricky job following the very good guide!

Have you checked for any fault codes yet?

What symtems would a faulty DIS pack cause though?? Interested as I also had faulty cam covers and the pots filled with oil. Already sorted that and replaced the plugs.

If you've got a miss fire its more than likely to be the plug leads due to them being bathed in oil.

Ive not really noticed a missfire but I have powerloss like gary but when you put it in sports it appears to be fine (well up until 60mph then it appears to skip a gear and struggles until it reaches 75

Oil fried leads can cause the dis pack to fail, and cause a misfire when under certain load conditions. Did you change the plugs at the time you did the cam covers and  spray the leads with brake cleaner to remove all the oil. :-?

I did the cam covers yesterday, as well as changing the plugs and cleaning the leads, but saying that Ive had an oil leak for about a month and the plugs were just about above the oil level so the leads were soaked.
