Title: "Thumpy" gear change
Post by: Turk on 19 January 2008, 11:15:44
2.5td  '00 (93k).
I have a snatchy or lurching take up when letting out the clutch. I also have a slight "Thump" that appears to be coming from the rear when engaging and dis-engaging the clutch.

Unless I let the revs drop right down before depressing the clutch and carefully balance the throttle and clutch during the gear change, the engine revs slightly and my gear change is not far off that of a learner driver.

The DMF was recently changed for a new LUK item. The clutch was ok as it was changed just before I bought the car.  (They probably didn't realise the rattle was the DMF and not the clutch).

The guy that did the DMF job is ex-vauxhall and has done three DMF's in the last two months, so he knows his stuff.
I've spoken with him and he says he'll take it for a run.

Thanks for viewing all the same.  :y

If the carltons were anything to go by, the tumping from the rear was caused by the rear bushes being knackered, it could also be your gearbox mount, this would cause it to thump about when changing gears.

worth a check over anyways

Cheers  ;)

I'll check 'em out. Worth a look as you say. I have changed the rear bushes on my other Elite. That's not too much of a job.
I've had two Carltons but not had that problem.
Could be the gear box mounts. I've already changed the engine mounts, they were well knackered.
Hopefully it is something like that. I don't relish the thought of taking things down as far as the clutch again.
Cheers for the input.  :y

Im no expert so this may not be relevant or useful advice....

On my old 2.5CDX Auto there was a small leak from the diff. When the fluid got really low it would start to make a small clunk on each gear change. As the fluid got lower it would get worse. Filling back up returned gear change to smooth as silk.

Maybe change the fluid in the diff ?

Unless the Diff is leaking then there is no need to change the fluid as its supposed to be maintenance free according to the Book.

In all of the 12 omegas Ive had I have never come across any that leak  :-/

still thinking its the gearbox mount or rear suspension bushes.  :)

Mine leaks from the input shaft seal.  :y It stops the floor pan above it from rusting!!  ;D

Hmm..I do have an oil leak that appears to be from the front of the dif.  I'll try topping that up, see if it makes a difference.
I've noticed that this "thump" also happens when I depress the clutch when accelerating slightly above normal driving mode, as well as when I let out the clutch after selecting the next gear.
Still think it has something to do with the gearbox/clutch side of things though. Possibly something not releasing at the same time as the clutch pedal.
Anyone have any links etc to images of the gearbox mount rubbers.
The gear change is a bit like it's being pushed against a rubber boot or something that's fallen out of place. It goes in but it's far from a slick, smooth action.
