Hi guys I was just wondering if anyone on here can tell me what the s button does, I know it's for " a sporty drive" but it makes such a change. :o. I've had sports mode on two cars before but they were not as drive changing as this on the miggy, :-? :-?
Thanks in advance, steve.

it holds on to the revs a liitle longer, in fact right up to the red line if required
-
the s button holds each gear for longer time using the full revs but i think you only get 1 2 and 3rd
-
I will change into 4th.. when you're going fast enough [smiley=evil.gif]
It also isn't so quick to change up when you lift off, which means when you come back on the gas it's more responsive. Seems to shift a little harder too. Maybe it compromises a little on the comfort of the shift by upping the ATF pressure?
Don't think it has any affect other than to the transmission but it certainly makes the car feel more lively.

I thought 'S' mode locks out 4th? :-/
Back to the question, yes holds revs longer, to red line. Thats it!

I can't say for the Omeag but in a Senator it locked 4th out up to 127mph! ;) :y

Cos it said so in the hand book!!! ;) ;D
I do know that the sunroof in an Omega that has a speed input to it doesn't self close at that kind of speed though! ::) ::) :y

Some firmwares seem to lock out 4th when in Sport, so its banging on the rev limiter at 129mph (and you think you've blown it!). Certainly v9 firmware on GS820 ecu does not suffer this limitation. Apparently.
Most petrol gearbox firmwares allow car to redline if you're on the kickdown switch.

Try selecting 2nd on the gearshift and press the "s" button for extra fun on the twisty bits ::)

This is great fun .. however .. a word of warning ........
Do NOT have the MID set to "instantaneous consumption" whilst doing this... it only leads to angst ... :(

Thats OK, the MID is programmed not to read below 7.1mpg

Yep. The truth is much worse than that. Worst case of a 3.2 generating 218 BHP means that it'll be devouring fuel at a rate of very roughly a litre a minute. As it goes through 30MPH it'll be doing 2 MPG. 4MPG at 60, etc... When it reaches its' top speed of 149, it'll be doing 9.9 miles per gallon. Heck, almost into double figures.
It will only be generating peak power as it hits 6,000 RPM, of course, so it's not quite as bad.. Makes you think though. :o
Time to put the damn calculator away.

thats one thing i haven't used yet, bloody kickdown is enough. I use the "S" on the cavalier all the time as the kickdown isn't that good.
i have had the cavalier lock up 4th with "S" on and foot buried in the floor at approx 115mph and it was still pulling :o

I was gonna say the same I gave pressed the "S" button a couple of times and thought there aint no point, stick your foot to the floor and they go well enough :y
-
yep, the 3.0 will kick down at about 95 without any help from the s button! :y :y
-
In a straight line the sport button doesn't really make a huge difference over kickdown, although mine doesn't seem to really redline it unless the sport mode is on.
It does transform the gearbox on twisty roads when "pressing on", though, because it's not (as) constantly up and down the gears as you accelerate and ease off. It also holds the lower gears so you get some engine braking when you lift off whereas you get none otherwise.

Apparently even faster, 3.0 autos change into fourth at around 130 so i am told if your foot is to the floor :-?

Just under. Apparently.

erm yes just under 130 it changes into 4th, just ask the guy in a 07plate rangerover sport on the A30 westbound late last year who got in my way :y

Hang on - you're playing with your calculator while driving at 149 mph?? :o I think you should have another look at the Highway Code, cos I think that at least one of those actions isn't recommended.
Anyway, the Sport button on my 2.2 definitely doesn't lock out top (4th) gear; unlike most auto cars I have driven (particularly BMWs and Toyotas).

A 2.2 can go fast enough to redline in 3rd? :o

I spoke to a guy who was driving one of these http://www.ultimasports.co.uk/spyder/index.html at Le Mans once and he said he'd had a bit of a blast one the way down. Had to abort it because he dropped his mobile phone :o. Apparently he was "bouncing off the rev limiter in top" at the time (160MPH speedo had hit the end stop). Suggested he got a higher reading speedo. His response was "after I get a higher geared diff" 8-)
I think my license would last about a quarter of an hour if I ever got my hands on one of those. [smiley=evil.gif]
