Title: burning smell after normal driving ???
Post by: puffa on 27 January 2008, 09:58:38
I have devloped a extremely hot/burning smell after normal driving around town, have checked that the Tesco carrier bag that had welded itself to the cat had not attached itself again, nothing there, also followed system to back of car to check not touching the body anywhere,, as an example when i pulled into burger king drive thru sat at the serving hatch waiting for my big boy burger i could smell it then, temp guage was good and the fans were not running, anyone ever encounter this before ???

Could it be that the gearbox oil could need changing and would this smell be an indication of it,,

Regards
Steve.

it may be oil leaking from cam covers onto exhaust manifold, its a common fault so i would check that first

What fascinates me about car compnies/designers...cam covers, its a known fault, been known about for many years now...soooooo...as the metal covers work much better as seen on the Vectra...why not change the cam covers on the newer Omegas coming out to metal cam covers???!!!

I had something similar a few months back and tracked it to my Cam Belt - one of the idler's was working it's self loose :o. Luckily replaced the idlers and belt before it slipped off and killed the car. It's the worst case scenario but may be worth checking. Hows the Aux belt tensioner? This maybe worth checking too.

Another question  -  Are you sure it's not coming from the wheels? Again I had an issue when I first bought my car 5 years ago and brake shoes where non existing - the sensors had been cut off for some reason and the pads where all the way down giving off a hot metal smell every time I drove it - even very short distances like the corner shop for the paper!!! 8-). HTH

Good luck  :y

We should all be grateful that the thin cam cover gaskets are the weakest link - on cars with massive gaskets you simply get camshaft damage when the breathers become clogged and the pressure goes up.

This Omega 'feature' should really be considered a sort of very crude pressure relief system... proper maintenance (frequent oil changes and cleaning of breathers) will significantly prolong the cam cover gaskets' life.
