Just had head under bonnet and another good look. Found the HBV, even further down behind the engine than in the 'how to'...
Disconnected the vacuum pipe, made no difference to the heating in the cabin....BUT.... i also found the in/out water pipes to the heater matrix, top one is really hot, one below it is decidedly lukewarm....
Does that mean a blocked matrix?

Could be airlock

I have had this problem for a while on our 2.5. Matrix flushed, blockage in pipe to throttle body cleared, filled using different filling points, no improvement.
This weekend's act of desperation was to modify the heater circuit to be the same as my 2.6. An additional electric pump is mounted below the header tank, in series with the pipe from the HBV to the top matrix pipe.
I now have a much higher temperature at the heater outlet pipe, so flow must be improved and the cabin temperature seems higher.
A cold morning run I hope will establish whether it has been successful/worthwhile.
I will post results.

Get the hosepipe onto one and then the other of the waterpipes to give the matrix and good flush, I was suprised how much crap came out of Mrs Rangey :-?

I have followed the how-to on here for getting to the matrix pipes implicitly but i cant remove the damn hoses from the pipes.
I pulled back the clip ok, twisted the connector on the pipe to free it but then it just wont come off
