Title: Urgent help needed please
Post by: Entwood on 27 January 2008, 14:26:50
I have a MAJOR problem...  doing the seats job passenger side done fine all good no problems ...

Now my side, slid seat forward, undid 2 rear seat rail bolts no problem, slid seat back undid the bolt by the tunnel, no problem ... now the bolt by the door was already slightly loose and is just spinning not undoing at all, can't see any access to behind it so lets put everything back together and have a think .... insert bolt by tunnel, ok ....slide seat forward .. AHHHHHH  will only go forward about an inch and stops ..  can see nothing blocking the runners but it moves back and forward just an inch from fully rear ... so I can't get to put the back bolts in ... and a seat held in with one tight bolt is not my idea of safe !! so the car is undriveable at this moment.....

Any ideas anyone ?? can the seats be "resynched" in anyway ?? I don't have a "manual drive tool", what can I use instead ??

ANY ideas gratefully accepted ..

I'm now considering trying to "dremel" off the bolt head of the spinning bolt, just so I can get the seat out and try and see whats wrong ... but I have a feeling that trying to cut a high tensile steel bolt is not going to work..

desperate for ideas folks ...  :(

Edit .. bin that idea .. dremel doesn't even touch it, barely causes a surface scratch.

I've tried ramming an old screwdriver up the little hole at the front of the mount to try and jam what I assume should be a captive nut ... hasn't worked ...

Can't see anyway of getting in from under the car ..... unless I'm going blind ....

Am getting very p******* off now  :(

The bolt will be blocking the seat going forwards and back...some brute force may help the get the seat back out of the way of the offending front bolt...then maybe try screwing the bolt back in after all it must have been lower originally...or a big hammer...just to get the bolt clear of the runners...

Nope .. the bolt is well clear, it stops a good 2 inches before it reaches the bolt head.. methinks I might have to buy a REALLY tough drill bit and try and drill the head of the bolt ... :(

At least if I can get the seat out I can either fix the travel problem or use the base off the seats I've just bought..

cant you burrow the manual winding tool from somebody? maybe there is someone local?

I thought that once the seat had been manually wound forward and back it recalibrates its self as such?

If there is anyone in North Wilts /Swindon area - or even further afield if neccesary - that has one I can borrow I'd love to hear .. especialy if its available for pickup tomorrow morning !!!

Moves up and down fine .. its forward and back that is the problem ... :(

I'm trying to work out if there is a similar "worm drive nut" on the forward/back bar .. and if so how to get to it ... :(

Edit .. I've examined the bases of both the ones I got, no worm drive nut on either, for any adjustment ... don't look a bit like the ones in that link .. :( - these are Elite electric ones, drivers with memory

From memory the tool is a hexagonal bar and will move fore and aft.

A ball ended allen key on a long shaft would do it I think.

Absolutely right, 5mm dia rod with 4mm A/F square at one end, crank the other.

Memory at my age obviously not to be relied on.

Many thanks .. so a 4mm square drive is needed with a thin shank .. chances of me finding one of them ???  :(

I wonder if the stealers would have the actual drive tool and how much ... ??  Just an arm or an arm & a leg ?

:(

Hi
How about making the tool from a spare 1/4" drive extension.  Just grind the end down by 1mm on each face and there is your 4mm square tool.  Can even drive it using your 1/4" drive ratchet.  !/4" drive sets can be bought for as little as £5, ideal base for modifying for all sorts of purposes.
