Title: My Elite is rocket powered...........
Post by: peredur on 01 January 2008, 20:22:54
................. but not in a good way. When I'm using cruise control at 70mph in my 3.0 V6 it feels like I'm doing about 140mph. My wifes Vectra cruises at 80 like it's doing 40. Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong. My old Audi did 90 all day long and it was effortless - I was kind of  hoping for the same vibe on the Omega!

Yes, don't understand the question...

Can I assume that you mean it is revving too high? Is it an autobox?

More details please.

Ummmm... more details!

The engine is ticking over at 2500 as it should, there is just this sensation of adrenaline pumping speed. I have never driven RWD before, but I cannot believe that it makes that much difference.

Well, assuming that you're not taking cocaine or amphetamines before you take the car out, I would hazard a guess at suspension, geometry alignment problems. Maybe wishbones or track rod end bushes? Wouldn't this make the car unstable at higher speeds?

Was just going to say... Symptoms sound pharmacologically induced!

even my 2.2 manual sits at 80 all day long (rpm is about 3.2k)

My 2.5 V6 auto sits a little lower 3.1k rpm with cruise, and it willl sit there all day.

can we have some more details please? Is the car revving to high? too much wind noise? ride too hard?

i have experienced such a feeling in the miggy in the past.....

if i am A roading it  there are times when it feels like i am going a lot faster than i actually am, there is nothing wrong with the car i put it down to the surroundings, high ate of speed on roads with close hedgerows and a lot of oncoming traffic at similar speed

if the car is twitchy then i would recommend getting the suspension checked out, but as a rule on the motorway at triple digit speed an Omega is one of the most relaxing places i have been  :y

My 2.5 v6 sits at around 3.1k on the revs at 70 as well and is quiet as a mouse with a bit of wind noise, nothing OTT though. Loves to cruise happily at this speed and above (obviously only on the continent ::))

I got rid of a 1.8 Vectra to go to the Omega(my second) and find it a more relaxing ride, due to head down south in a few weeks and don't have ANY worries at all about getting there and back (around 700 mile round trip)

Having driven a 2.0l for 3 years, I was amazed how my recently acquired 2.6l felt as if it was travelling much faster at just 30 mph initially. Never really worked out why, but the sensation soon disappeared and everything now feels normal.

i'd check to make sure your speedo and display is giving the correct read-out then, cos personally even in my 2.0, the fact that these cars are so effortless to cruise on the motorway, you'd be more likely to be feeling like you're going slower than you really are, not faster

IMO

Garage said check tracking. Turns out it was WAY out. Had it done, we shall see. Thanks for all the responses.

Try this link for what can possibly be a perceptional speed issue when you first move from standadrd to cruise:

I always think the opposite :-?
I think My Omega doesn't give the impression of going fast, until I have a look at the speedo :o

I must agree ....  SWMBO did not believe we were doing legal + double VAT in the new beast the other day .. it just picks up and goes without effort and feels much less. I am having to watch the speedo VERY carefully at the moment !!

My meggy was twitchy , cambers way out (also evident from tyre wear)

Took it to Tony @ Wheels in Motion - now sorted !

Got to agree tho , feels slower at 70 than a lot of other cars (never go any faster , honest)  ;D

Triple digit speed you say??? Like 69.9mph!?!  :y

Cruise control is a bit of a weird sensation at first though. Like, "how on earth can a car drive itself", and initially can give a little bit of "oh $hit!"  ;D

I have to agree with davlad22 that when you first use cruise control it is a bit a a wierd sensation, I have just started using mine and did not like the sudden apparent surge it appeared to give when first switched on.

Now I am getting use to it when I can find suitable traffic conditions, not easy on the desperately overcrowded roads around here.  It will be great to use on the fabulous roads in France when I get the chance!

the wierdest thing is when it is pulling a hill with cruise on and all of a sudden it kicks down and accelerates back to the preset speed  :o :o

wierd, and initially feels wrong, but after a while you get used to it......

France is great, especially late at night, get it to 130kph, hit the cruise button and just drive......

out of the 1400 miles i did last year in France i would say nearly 1300 of it was with cruise on

hmmm not me, living in Germany!

I scared the poo out of my mother a couple of months back as we were 'cruising' back from Cologne airport.  The old dear was nice and comfy in the back not realising we were doing 110mph with the cruise on.  When she asked what speed we were doing she s#@t herself  ::) ::)

Hey its my car and it was legal  8-)
