I have been living with this error on the MID every start up for quite a while now (well ever since I bought the car actually, about 6 months)
So far I have checked both suspension sensors both of which needed to be unseized. All the knuckle joints were seized solid with rust, the arms are now moving freely.
I have also removed both headlights, removed the adjuster motors, opened them up to make sure the motors are working.
Both are fine with no sign of corrosion what so ever, I even connected them whilst removed from the headlight to make sure that they are working.
I am now at a loss at what to try next.......
Maybe have a look at the control unit which I beleive is under the front off side wheel arch liner to check the wiring/connections :-/
After this it looks like a random parts changing session unless Tech 2 can determine which part is at fault?
Any suggestions will be gratefully received as this is now doing my head right in :(

cant remember if cheapo tech2 will read hids - if so ;)

I could be wrong, But i thought the Suspension (self levelling) sensors were separate to the HID level sensors?? (my suspension levelling continued to work while My Headlamp levelling went screwy just prior to the Xmas before last.... )
(although on the face of it at least, it would seem more efficient to use one set to do both jobs.... )

HID sensors NSF and NSR arms. Suspension, OSR arm.

cant remember if cheapo tech2 will read hids - if so ;)
I don't think my code reader will read headlight/system faults :'( Has anyone else experienced the same problem with the headlamp levelling system?

Yes. Mine was the rear level sensor, which looked OK but a proper Tech II diagnosed it. A new-to-me replacement from here ( :-[ sorry, I can'tremember who from) sorted it.
I've never tried my Cheapo Tech II as it was bought after the HID level fault.

On mine the arm on the suspension mechanism had snapped (front near side). Not sure how economically replacable so I araldited it up and seemed to cure the message and headlamp aim looks ok. Ironically it was when it was at the MOT station that it happened.

Never ever to this day seen or heard of a controller failure....

Just clutching at straws really, was wondering if the connector had worked loose :-/
Edit: Could it be a faulty relay? (K19)

Most likely to be a level sensor. £50-ish IIRC ;)

Mine was the servo motor in the left hand headlamp, full of corrosion.
Not too hard to remove and inspect.

I see a lot of these errors, and its only ever been sensors (particularly front) or seized motors.
