We bought our omega from a 'reputable' garage....before we bought it the garage serviced it and gave it an MOT. we brought it home and chris was not happy with the shocks (all round) so we decided that since we will be pulling a caravan we would invest in some monroe levelling shocks for the back and some new for the front... when took the others off they are totally shot...as are the roll bars, and the catalytic converters have been totally bodged....cut and crimped into place with a load of gunk put round them to seal them....what can we do.... wish bones weren't too bad but he has put a new one on anyway. help!

There's a site where you can check if the MOT is valid, and, I THINK, say if you think it should not be. I'll have a look round and post back.

Try this one:

On the VOSA site it says they tested it and it failed its first test on a faulty brake light...then passed the second test.

Did the "selling" garage do its own MOT ?? I always suspect those ....
Even if it went to a "mate" if you are not happy you can report it, and an independent engineer will "redo" the MOT, if major problems the garage is in the poo... however if you have done ANY work on the car since (and it appears you have) .. this check immediately becomes invalid, as they would be checking YOUR work not the state of the car when originally tested!

as i feared entwood...nothing we can do then.....poo...just have to put it down to experience and sort it....which we have already done...shame because it has made me not trust the car. i know my husband can sort it though.

You say the cats have been bodged....is it just the cat heat shields on the front pipes?

as the vt20 mot test certificate states "WARNING" A TEST CERTIFICATE IS NOT EVIDENCE THAT THE VEHICLE IS IN A SATISFACTORY CONDITION", there is as stated an appeal system in place but that to tells you not to touch the car. the test is a "basic minimum safty standard test" sadly a lot of the general public seem to think that everything on the car should be covered by an MOT WARRANTY" but as we know this is not the case. yes garages are allowed to test their own vehicles but the whole system is now quite well policed by computer, visits and mystery customers. sorry you have ended up with a "bad un"

i dont think garages should be allowed to test cars they have done work on. If there is something wrong, they wont know about it because otherwise they wouldnt have done it in the first place.
Its like spell chekching your own spelling, you wouldnt know it was wrong because you wouldnt have written it wrong in the first place!

yes agreed maybe we should send our own cars to another MOT station to be tested? but remember, any car at any time could be stoped by police or involved in an accident and retested so its not in our intrests to pass a "dodgy" car we try to remain as ever impartial!

From experience of these types of retailers Used cars are bought as seen & MOTS are valid for day of issue. I went to Citizens advice about a car i bought once that developed faults after purchase.
Best way is to go back & try & reason with them. If the dont want to know remind them that bad puiblicity does them no good & write to the local rag. Also tell everyone you know, word of mouth is also good way of getting word about. The owners of these places mostly dont care about custoomers once they have flogged a car
