Hi everyone. I took my car to the garage today to get the thermostat replaced as the engine isn't heating up ( temp guage only slightly moves and heater blows barely warm air). It seemed like the mechanic nearly had a heart attack when he started to do the job.
He said there was a rag stuck in for some reason and the bolts were all in a mess so he couldn't do the job. He said it was like opening a can of worms and heaven knows what problems would be created by attempting the job. He said it woud be best to just leave it with it being such a valueless car.
I don't know what to do now. Do you think I should just leave it or take it somewhere else like the dealer? Will it wreck the engine running cold or does it not matter? I don't understand enough about it really, I wish I did!

Sounds to me like the can't be bothered with the job. It is a fairly involved job on the V6.
Do you know where the rag was stuck? :o
Might be worth getting someone local from here to cast an eye over it as I think this guy's just making a meal of it. I suspect he quoted for the job without realising it's not a 10 minute job on a V6.

I tend to agree with Kevin Wood above - he probably though it was a half hour job. Its not.
Its not difficult (not that I've done one yet), but is time consuming.

As i said on your other post that was a very good price you were quoted for a V6 ;)

Just about sums up today's 'Throw Away' society. :(
As long as you like and want the car you've got, then what you
have to weigh up is the price difference in repairing what you have,
and the price to change to a different car, that may or may not need
repairs to it.
Nobody gives anything away, and it's rare to get a second hand
'Bargain' that has no faults. That's why you buy cheap, knowing
that you'll have faults to fix, but you'll have the the money saved
from paying for a 'Faultless' model to fix it to your standard.
And often cheaper than buying a 'Faultless model. :)

Thanks for that advice. I really like the car and want to get it fixed but the mechanic made me worry that it would cost many many hundreds. Being an unemployed teacher I can't afford to pay bags full of cash.
Maybe I should take it to the vauxhall dealer. Do you know if they give quotes?

Avoid vx dealer as they are firstly ( generally) incompetent and secondly rather expensive...
Best bet is to get a local member to look at the issue.....its not over complex to replace the thermostat however its time consuming and daunting to a first timer....

See if a member on here, that lives in the Sunderland area,
can recommend a local Independent or Mobile mechanic.

Thanks. Why are Vx dealers so bad? Surely they have experience of working on omegas so should be experts?
There's probably no oof members live around here. Well not if they've got sense anyway!

Kate, I live near Spennymoor, about 25 miles from you. One of my mates lives near Hylton Castle, I am seeing him on Sunday, I'll ask him if he knows anyone who can help.

Thanks Mel. Thats very kind of you. I'm totally clueless and don't know what to do for the best. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I've took my car to 3 garages and none of then have fixed it and two of them charged!
I used to work at Castle View school next to Hylton Castle!

Seriously, don't panic. You'll get a solution from this Forum if you're prepared to be patient. Don't spend silly money at Main stealers or incompetent/indifferent independents.
And the cambelt meet on the 23rd. would definitely see you sorted if you don't solve it earlier. Grab a friend and make it a day out. Everyone's welcome!

A trip to Telford might cost you a few quid in fuel but at least you know the job will be done properly :y

trust me they see a women and the £££££££ signs are rolling in their eyes...... i remember the first bloke to attempt to do this to me boy did he get a shock when i started to explain and ask question he soon changed his tune when hi found out i was a engineering tech.
i am sure there is someone close who could help (comon fellas help her out ) you could even help pay there fuel to travel if need be but under no circumstances go to VX

Money is a bit tight at the moment so I can't afford to travel anywhere. I spent the money I kept for the car on clothes!
I was just thinking about what the mechanic said 'the job has been bodged before and if we attempted it would wouldn't be able to get the parts back together.'
Do you think this was an excuse because they didn't want to do the job? Or do you think it could be true? I've haven't got a clue myself either way.

Thanks Marie. I used live in north Hampshire. I have lived at Yateley and Andover. I really like it especially Yateley as Andover is a bit isolated. I wish I still lived there!

Still not fixed. Does anyone know of any good garages in the north-east?
