It has 3 settings:
Light off - recirculation off
Arrows lit - recirculation on
Arrows and A in middle lit - auto recirculation
You can leave it in the off or automatic settings with no problems. In the auto. mode it will switch to recirculated air whenever it detects bad air quality which can be good when you're following a smokey diesel, for example.
I wouldn't leave it with recirculation on for long periods as this causes the interior of the car to steam up and can cause drowsiness.

It is on my car....

Incidentally, while we're on this subject...
Last weekend we were driving round sunny (not!) exmoor and I was having a real job keeping the windows clear. Car was steaming up badly and nothing I did with the climate helped, until I switched recirc on, then back off again.
No change to airflow when I switched the recirc on, but when I switched off I heard the flap move, airflow sound changed and it demisted in about 20 seconds. Thereafter there were no problems at all. Clearly the recirc was active despite being turned off (no light showing).
Has anyone had this happen to them? I'm wondering if it was a glitch in the climate firmware or a problem with the actuator, or if the climate goes into recirc sometimes despite it being disabled? Seems to work 100% reliably now and I can't reproduce it so I'm tending to think it's the former. :-/

Thanks for the tips guys :y

I noticed in mine that when the refrigerant was too low to enable the compressor, the A function is no longer available.

Mine only goes from arrows to off. No A, but I can see an A but it won't light.

Interesting. mine won't go into the "A" mode if the ECO light is on, so obviously auto-recirc is only supported with the air con active (and perhaps working).

Looks like I might have to get mine checked...
