Title: Engine Cut Out - 3.0 MV6
Post by: Calum on 10 February 2008, 19:32:22
Hi Chaps

My Omega (registered March 2000) developed a worrying problem today when I was driving along the M9. First of all there was a problem when the the engine very briefly cut out (literally for half a second) but came back on again. A few minutes later as I was exiting the motorway the engine cut out completely and would not restart. I waited a couple of minutes and as it would still not start I called the rescue service. The rescue truck turned up after around half and hour and the mechanic asked me to try and start again so he could try and get an idea of what was wrong. Anyway, the car started first time. I was a bit embarrased!

I got some information from TheBoy about doing a papercip test and chances are that I would receive a code 19. However I have read the instructions and it says that this only covers models up to 1999. Is this correct and if so is there a way to find out if my crankshaft sensor is faulty without going to a dealer?

Mind you, I am not very technical and the paperclip test looks a bit complicated  :-[

Cheers

Calum

paperclip test will work on all 2.0/2.5/3.0 petrol cars

Get it paper clipped, all 3.0's can be.

Strongly suspect its a 19 crank sensor.

exactly the same problem with mine a couple of years ago, and the same result when recovery bloke turned up, started and he could'nt find any faults. Anyway chopped it into Vx on the Monday replaced the sensor all been well since, cost £150 bucks though. But I had no choice as was in dundee and had to get back to London, that was before the Forum  :(

There's a boy in blue/hi viz  just up the road from you lurking on this forum somewhere. You could always try to compare notes.

Easy to fit, make sure you get the right one. There are several types. Replace ASAP!!

You could find yourself with a dead car on the side of the road tommorow!

Worth getting a gadget.  I think I still hold the record for the most inconvenient crank sensor failure....

That will be me, then....

Howdoo Calum.  Not sure how these posts slipped past me....

Yup, I'm just along the other end of the Regional Road, 20 minutes away, if you need a hand.   :y

Thanks hotel21. I have a list of niggly problems that I'll be looking to address once I get this one fixed so I will be asking questions.

Where about in Fife are you?
