Title: Handbrake Help
Post by: TheBoy on 11 February 2008, 20:03:29
Can't get it through the MOT.  OSR handbrake just hasn't got enough.

Before MDTM adjusted and cleaned it all, it was both sides that were naff/

I have now changed the rear discs (genuine) and shoes (ferrodo) and pads (genuine) for good measure, but on a test, pulling handbrake on sharply at 30mph leaves only 1 black line in the road.

I am out of ideas, and really don't want to scrap the car  :'(

Dont have %, just the figures (unsure of units):

NSR - 150, lockup
OSR - 80, no lockup

cable stretched ?
Things all adjusted as I think they should be, which should eliminate the chances of stretched cables.  The cable has be changed since I've had the car as well.

sounds like one side is duff, right enough. with OSR being the bugger.....

Think they should be to within 10% of each other and to provide collective 16% minimum braking effort.

No sticking shoe or fubar adjuster?

Just replaced the shoes tonight.  Not much can got wrong with adjuster - seems OK I think....   ....but then I can't think what else it can be....

simple but obvious....

remove all the protective coatings before assembly?  If just put together may well require repeated applications when moving - not to lockup just to wear - the shoes into place....

I degreased the stuff as I normally do - gunk, then a thorough wash with fairly liquid.  Obviously I paid attention to the 'shoe' area of disc as well, as that was what I was most concerned about....

Did you deadjust the cable before doing the shoes

trick I've used before is a quick light spray with a rattle can of paint on the linkages/pivot points where the cables are bare wire, not in the shrouds.  Then have a few applications of the brake (moving or stationary, makes no diff) to see that the same relative movement on each side.  Not a cure, but can give an idea of what particular bit to look at most.

I think, however, the shoes on that corner just need to bed in some more....

Have you 'roughed' up the shoes with sandpaper to help them settle in??

ARe all cables mvoing freely?

With the hand brake applied hard, is the adjusting point link bar off to one side or nice and perpendicular to the handbrake?

I'm guessing its got to be the mechanism, based on the fact everything else is done?

Is the bottom pivot in the drum back plate all ok (it seemed ok when I tested it).

Want to pop up one evening for some work?

surely you cant do valentines day?!! DONT forget!

Im guessing the cable is free as its new? On my calibra, i had to take the cable of on one side & slowly feed oil down it while pulling it back and forth! It looked free and looked like it was moving (i could pull it with my hand) but against the other side(which was free) the otherside moved easy and the because the culprit side was stiffer, it just made the splitter part twist at a funny angle.
Good luck

I can do any day, except tues.  We've been together long enough not to do anything special on 14th, but go out on another (non rip off) night instead.

Cable seems to move freely when mrs theboy pulls the handrbrake on and off.

If there is more "give" on one side than the other for some reason (failing cable, etc.) you could be running out of movement on the balance bar where the 2 cables join under the handbrake lever (guessing now because I can't remember exactly what's under there on the Omega) but once all the "pivot" on the bar is taken up all the remaining effort goes into the side without the extra "give" IYSWIM. Hence one black mark and one ineffective brake.

I have had two cables where the plastic sheath has worn/leaked where it emerges from the outer casing at the rear - resulting in the cable effectively seizing on that side.

I'm assuming this isn't the problem as your cable is relatively new though.. :-/

Let us know the outcome.
