Title: How good a fit are vectra cam covers
Post by: toller on 12 February 2008, 15:08:35
I would have thought they'd have been a perfect fit but I seem to have had a permanent oil leak ever since i put them on.  I changed the seals again last weekend and oil is still pouring out of the drivers side cover around were the oil filler cap is, passenger side seems ok.

I used genuine gaskets, torqued everything up properly and used the proper sealant but still it pours out and it's getting really really annoying.

Seriously considering ditching these things and going back to the plastic covers as i never seemed to have half as much trouble with those.

I was very careful when i put everything back together that nothing was trapped and that the gasket had seated properly so i'm quite surprised that it's leaking.

Is there anywhere else in that area that it's able to leak from?

Did you clean the breather system as well ??

If not then any pressure in the crankcase will build up and blow through the camcover gaskets - they act like a safety valve !!

I believe - not certain here - that the vectra covers can prevent this saftey valve effect and cause major oil leaks from elsewhere as the pressure HAS to go somewhere ....  :(

Is it leaking from around the base of the oil filler?? might be the only place the presure can escape ?

Breathers were totally clean, i made absolutely sure of that.

It's leaking from the area around the oil filler which is now on the drivers side although it's not actually coming from the filler cap itself.  Also if you take off the oil filler cap with the engine running there isn't any release of pressure.

If another seal has gone somewhere else where would be the best place to start looking.

I don't know the vectra covers at all .. but is the filler neck detachable like the meega one is ?? IIRC there was a seal in the cover where the filler neck screwed in ..  ? or is the "join" of the neck to the cover cracked ??

i carnt understand why people fit vectra cam covers if the breathers are totally clear and you use genuine vauxhall parts for gaskets you will get no problems and be able to fill your oil up without the use of a funnell !!!! >:(

Didn't you have a problem with one of the cam cover bolts fitting onto the cam caps, stripped thread if i remember. Fitted the Vectra cam covers to my Elite about 18 months ago, keep breathers clean every 6 months & never leaked since
