Hi everyone. I recently bought a 2.5 V6 estate and was wondering whether 18 mpg around town is normal? I think my thermostat is faulty (running cold). Do you think this would affect mpg?
Thanks a lot? :-*

I get around 21-22 knocking around with my 3.0 litre, think 2.5s are supposed to be better on fuel. Wouldn't have thought a thermostat would affect the mpg.. Air Pipes leaking can cause lower mpg, I would be looking at those first..
-
Where would the air pipes be? Thanks but I'm a bit clueless. :-X
-
i have a 2.5v6 estate tourer i get about 24 to 27 round town a lot depends on how heavy footed you are
-
Running very cold may affect many things, thermostat change needed.

This is a thread about the Air Pipes http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1152565204

Hi Kate, when did the car have it's last service ::)
-
on a light thrash back on my 9 mile commute, got my average to 24.1 mpg ::)
was 25.2 when i left ;D
3.0 Estate :y

open stat will make mpg bad.

open stat will make mpg bad.
Why is that then Jaime? :-?

Why is that then Jaime? :-?
Engine doesn't reach operating temp so ECU keeps the fuel enrichment (Choke in other words) program running because it thinks the engine is cold.

A cold running engine will run richer.
-
Oh right, learning all the time :)
-
Thanks for all your help. It's obvious my engine needs work. :-[
I just got the car so I don't know when it was last serviced as there was no service book.
I'll have to face those mechaincs again. Oh no :-X :-/ >:(

Forgot to mention. I drive really economically. Did some advanced driver training and have been driving since the eighties. I look really young for my age though! ;D

Other factors that effect MPG
grippy tires-snow tires (really effect)
EGR (you can block it-but will effect the idle periodically when engine is hot-but worth )
o-rings under plenum..
leaking exhaust
new lambda sensors (expensive but effect consumption)
Coolant temperature sensor..
But if your route is very frequent start stop traffic with low average speeds its normal..
Now I'm getting 21-22 on a normal traffic (not frequent start stops) on a 13 km journey..
but I use winter tires,de-cat and all sensors are new including exhaust system
I think 18 mpg is possible..

I purchased my 2.5 v6 saloon just over a year ago (90k) , no service history to speak of, but had a recent receipt for plugs and full timing belt change (phew).
On a long run (london to Portsmouth - 90 miles) I was averaging 34 mpg max. Once in Jersey (hence the Portsmouth trip) the average mpg went slowly down - but then they have a 40 mph limit across the whole isle of Jersey and this Auto is meant for motorway cruising.
At home i'm averaging about 19 mpg, doing 2 mile trips to Tesco's, and back etc. plus the odd journey out on the m25 for a 50 mile blast.
My old Austin Maestro (1.6 ltr auto - and auto choke) would average less, about 18 mpg for Tesco trips. But once on the motorway and up and down the dales of yorkshire i got 35 mpg out of it.
All said and done, its how you use the right ankle (or wrist in case of my bike).
I have been experimenting with the bike - using acetone as a fuel additive, (loads of stuff on here and the web about this i guess) but i did find that it made the bike run slightly smoother (and FJ1200 can vibe loads) and I think i got better mpg - but that is all very subjective. But it has not caused any problems using it.
I wont yet use acetone in the Omega, cos the engine management system is so complex.
My bike is a straight four, carb's and simple air cooled. Omega is a different proposition. :-X

Thanks for your help! Very informative! :y

If I'm not mistaken, someone mentioned the Cambelt party to you on the 23rd in one of your previous posts.
Although the major work list has had to be closed for this occasion, you would save the cost of the trip just by talking to all the experts who'll be there giving you the right info. on your problems. You might even find someone who could do little things for you during the course of the day.
I believe some of them are ordinary human beings, as well! ;D ;D

So global warming isn't working for you yet, Cem?

Cambelt party is a bit far away for me but I would have loved it! :-*

I'm not using tyre chains or anything! ;D

It was being towed.....hard work with no power steering to!

Ahh.
on a bar I assume?

Mine showed 999.9mpg when I was driving it! What a careful driver I am! ;D

who was pushing it at the time....? ;D
-
I drive exactly the same car as you and I get about the same round town as you....we have had new bits added and car serviced it hasn't changed mpg. sorry but i still love my car...just keep it for weekends and pulling caravan hate to say it but I do running around in a very cheap Micra.....
-
No-one was pushing it to get 999.9mpg I just put carlsberg special brew in the tank by mistake! ;D
I have found out a 100% guaranteed way to cut fuel consumption figures by 50%.......
-
Drive it 50% less! ha ha ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
I realise that fuel consumption figures are never going to be good but I think it's worth it to drive such a great car. :y
I couldn't bring myself to buy a cheap little runabout such as a micra.
I'll probably change my mind when bankruptcy looms! ;D
-
My average is about 19mpg. 60% of my driving is town driving :'(
When I picked the car up, I drove 200 miles on motorways between 65-75 all the way home (with the odd tiny blast here and there - seeing what acceleration was like from 50-75 ish) and my average was 34.5mpg which I didnt think was bad for the 3L Auto.
I did once reset the MPG when I was in traffic, im NEVER doing that again though - to depressing looking at single figures! ;D

Thats my Exact reason for buying mine!
Dont mind paying a few quid extra every week to drive something which has all the toys and fab ride.
Will keep it untill I cant afford to run it any longer (Im only a student for another few months, so I SHOULD beable to manage!) :y

Good luck with your course Ian. Will you be keeping your miggy when you get a job? :-*
