Hi all,
Today was the first day I have had to sit in traffic since I got the car. During my 20 minute crawl the temperature gauge was acting most peculiarly.
After about 10 minutes the gauge was reading 1 line under the red. Oh bugger me thinks. Turned off and checked everything. Engine was warm but not over heating, no excess pressure detected anywhere, no leaks, no bad smells etc.
After about 20 minutes I started her back up. Gauge was at 92. It was getting dark so I put my lights on. The gauge climbed. Turned lights off and the gauge stopped climbing. Turned lights back on and the gauge climbed again.
Was going to turn her off again but the traffic started moving so I decided to crawl on. As I started to move, the gauge started to fall slowly and went back to 92. Then the traffic stopped again. As I was stationery the gauge started its upward creep again.
Out of idle curiosity I shifted the car into neutral and applied the hand bake. I revved the car to about 2,000rpm and the needle fell back again. After about 20 seconds the gauge rested back at 92.
Now, after getting home and leaving the car for a few hours I have gone to check her over. Though the water is pretty murky she hasn't lost any. There are no puddles under my car and she starts and drives fine.
Sorry for the long post but what do you good folks think. Dodgy temp gauge, thermostat, fans, or something more sinister?

I would give the cooling system a good flush to start with & fill with Vx red antifreeze 50/50 mix

If coolant murky then agree with advice above.
Also, any other strange dashboard behaviour?
Worth checking for a bad dashboard contact. Try pressing the whole unit back a bit, there is a connector block that pretty much drives everything.

I shall book her in tomorrow for a coolant flush and change.
Other dash instruments work fine and it is tightly secured.

Book it in :o ? It's something that can very easily be done yourself, you don't need any fancy tools to do it - Honest!! :y :y There's a guide here some where if you look.

Check the fuses in the engine bay ecu/fuse box......

Other dash instruments work fine and it is tightly secured.

£40? I could still make a nice tidy out of you even if I used bottled spring water & stay clean! ;) A metric gallon of antifreeze is about £10 IIRC.

You probably could mate but I have just come from a world where you pay 550 quid for a set of standard front brake discs or 800 quid for an exhaust.
Besides I am incridebly lazy ;D
If anyone lives near me and wants to earn 20 quid then you are more than welcome to give me a shout :y

More importantly, I do jobs like this so I know that it has been done properly, with quality coolant at the correct strength.
Last time I took any of my cars to a main dealer (a long time ago!) they changed the oil and didn't replace the dip stick properly so by the time I got home and had a little peep under the bonnet (trusting soul, me!) oil had p1553d out everywhere.

SMC did a similar thing to my car once - didn't tighten up the oil filter so left most of my oil on the road.
Annoying yes but because they f****ed up, I was covered. If I had done it and f****ed up I would have felt sick, not annoyed.
