someone on here bought a diagnostic of ebay was it any good if so as any body got the link for it as i cannot find it on ebay
thank's guys

I recently bought an ELM based cable. It's excellent however it will only work with 2.0 / 2.2 / 2.6 / 3.2 Omegas AFAIK as the earlier 2.5 and 3.0 ECUs didn't support OBDII.
For those a "cheapo tech 2" is the best bet.

I bought one of these...................

Have only used it on my 2.2 petrol but it works fine, gives fault code with explaination of fault, reads live data from moment fault occured and resets the eml to clear the faults. HTH :y

Good morning Kevin,
I know nothing about these things. Is the ELM cable the tool I need for my '98 2.0l and my '01 2.6l engines? Does it need to be used with a laptop or is it a separate unit like the link given in a previous post.
I want to be able to diagnose my own problems but don't have the basic knowledge (yet). From what you've said, it seems either of these would be better for me than a cheapo 'tech 2' for the vehicles I have at the moment.
Cheers,
Bill.

The ELM based cables (and stand alone readers) will read the engine on a 2.6 and I believe on a 2.0 as well. However, they won't read other systems (auto box, ABS, etc). There is commercial software for these that claims to do other systems but I haven't tried it. ELM cables can also show live data from the engine ECU which can be useful for troubleshooting.
The cheapo tech 2 will work on more systems, and on the 2.5 / 3.0 v6, but is very temperamental, requires a laptop with a real serial port and, even when working, the software is very poor.
Depends what your requirements are really. :-/

Kev .. do you have a link to the one you have ?? As I now have a non-paperclippable 3.2 I'm thinking of investing .... and a proven one is far better than an ebay guess !! :)
-
No Problem...
This is what I bought:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250208955409
.. and this is more like what turned up:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=310022257909
Having said that I'm very pleased. It has a USB interface, worked first time and gives the option of using a variety of different software although a free application comes with it that can do code reading and live data.

Thanks for that, interesting .... :)
I was also looking at this .... a tad more expensive but the software is directed at Vx ??
http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_VAUX327U.html
any opinions ?
I was wondering if "your" device + their software .... would work ... comes out at about £75
:)

My understanding is that the Gendan software will work with any ELM327 interface. Looked at that myself but the Vauxhall software only adds code reading on a couple of ECUs so figured I'd keep an eye on it for further developments.

Okies .. I'll go with you then ... I'll order the one from your second link ..
Many thanks for the advice :)

That second link is merely visually the same as mine. Not necessarily the best price... Best to do a search as there are plenty to choose from.
I noticed there are much cheaper ones from Asia :-/
I took mine apart (I take apart everything I buy ::)) and it's made by these people: http://www.uiftechthai.com/ELM327.htm.

I have an OpelScanner, bought is second hand. New is quite expensive, comparing to all clones from E-Bay.
I don’t have any documents with mine and can’t update the soft, but can check every car (up to 2005, no CAN) and it works fine with petrol and there is a small delay with diesel engines. As far as I know there is new feature that allows changing few things in MID display. There is no problem to connect every Omega engine and most Vxhls. It doesn’t work with VectraC, new Astra, Zafira and Corsa. I know that guys are preparing new CAN enable interface but I assume that it will cost more than 1000 Euros.

Just to clarify, only the 2.2/2.6/3.2 petrols are EOBD compliant, and work with OBDII software. 2.0/2.5/3.0 are not, but are paperclippable ;)
