Hi all, My first post here - just bought a 2.5 facelift Elite to replace my '98 Elite which had developed a gearbox fault (was going to be too expensive to repair). Anyway, when I went to purchase the car it looked and sounded great and drove beautifully but when I started it the next morning - for those old enough to remember - it sounded as though the tappets needed adjusting. A job which I used to do fairly regularly a few years ago when I was a Triumph 2500 owner. After it's warmed up a little - say within the first 1 to 2 miles all is quiet again. It's almost as if the oil isn't reaching the parts it needs to quickly enough.
The car is just coming up to 70,000 mls. It had it's last service at 64,500 mls and the cam belt (complete kit) and water pump were changed at 58,000 mls. I guess another oil change would not go amiss to see if that helps but any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Is it tappets, or is it exhaust manifold 'ticking' - if latter, it will shut up after a couple of mins normally?

Sounds like the manifold gasket is leaking and when engine warms up the seal expands and reduces the noise

If you surf the threads you'll find that valve lifters, (tappets), can be noisy until the engine warms up and oil circulates fully. The experts here suggest trying changing the oil at very short periods 2 or 3 times, (500 miles),which can help. Sounds OTT, but if you buy with TC card, (join Autobahnstormers), it's very cheap to do. If you think the engine has had oil left in for very long periods, the lifters could be gunged up, and would welcome a nice clean drink.

My late 2002 2.6 was on a 20k mile service schedule before i bought her and now i'm looking at removing all the lifters to give them a clean. If only the previous owner was as caring as me then he'd of changed the oil on a more regular basis. She's only done 79k and other than the tapping noise she's great.
Your car sounds like a sheared manifold stud, common AFAIK. I had it on my W plate 2.0 a few years back. i ended up buying a new manifold and gasket from the stealers to put right.
