Title: Sounds like a hoover
Post by: Gogglebox on 18 February 2008, 17:39:49
Hello fellow members, information required.

On starting my '98 2.5 V6, you can barely hear the engine running due to a concealed fan? which I have traced to just infront of the passenger front wheel, whining its box off. This will continue for 3-5 minutes starting from cold. When hot it makes the noise for only 15 seconds or so. The engine runs fine at all times.

What is it? what does it do, and what would happen if I disconnected it? Why is it now making this noise, and appears to be getting progressively worse.

Not only is it annoying, but extremely loud when outside the vehicle, and onlookers begin to back away when you start up. :-[

If its like mine, it sounds like the secondary air pump thingy, Ive sort of got use to it, as it only does it when its cold.

Im told you can disconect them, but you had better check with some else on here just to be sure.

Yeah mine does it aswell, got used to it now.

If you rev the engine to just above 4000 rpm, it will shut it off :)

Or as zirk said, you can just unplug it!  I would, but cant be bothered with faffing about...

you can disconnect it, it will not be a problem or you could recycle one from the local scrapyard and do you carbon foot print the world of good (£20 ish)  :y
