Title: 68k no service history - cambelt a no brainer?
Post by: John Lewis on 19 February 2008, 01:37:47
My dilemma. Aint about to wait until 80k but no idea when the last cambelt change was. Picked it up for 700 quid, a 98/S black 2.0 16v CDX Automatic with just 68k on the clock and 11 months MOT.

Any tell tale signs the cambelt may be going? I want to get it done but need it for motorways for the next 2 weeks to get paid to do it! Possible 200+miles a week and I just drove it 150 yesterday getting it home. Should I be taking it mega easy? Cars only done 7k in the last year between MOTs and appears to be in good nick. Brakes, tyres, everything else great.

Feedback more than welcome.

Ta

John

my first omega had a service book stamp telling me my cambelt had been done at 67k, i bought it at 77k and took NO chances, changed the full cambelt kit and all its necessary add-ons that should be done at 80k

for your own peace of mind i'd do it ASAP, cambelt, aux belt, pulleys, tensioners and so on, oh and water pump

very easy to do on 2.0/2.2, no need to waste money on labour ;)

change tensioners (cambelt KIT) and waterpump.

PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT THE CAM BELT SHOULD BE CHANGED EVERY 40,000 OR 4 YEARS. DO NOT GO BY WHAT THE OWNERS BOOK SAYS, IF THERE IS  NO HISTORY WITH THE CAR THEN I WOULD ADVISE THAT THE CAR IS NOT PUSHED UP AND DOWN A MOTORWAY UNTIL IT IS CHANGED WITH THE TENSIONERS AND IDLER . VISUAL CHECK WILL TELL YOU NOTHING. TAKE NO CHANCES.
