Welcome to the forum, you will always get fumes coming out of the oil filler cap, if you take it off whilst the engine is running.

I would check around the engine, especially at the back for water leaks.

Hopefully the water fumes in the exhaust are just normal condensation, and the coolant loss is due to a leak as AA suggested.

But you can't ignore the possibility of a failed head gasket. Firstly check if there are any signs of water in the oil, i.e. mayo-like goo on the dipstick (mayo on the filler cap is normal!).

Then check for oily deposits in the coolant header tank and more importantly for burnt-smelling exhaust gasses in the header tank.

lastly a compression test would help confirm if you have a leaking head gasket, as will a gas analyser inserted into the coolant header tank.

Might be worth pulling out the spark plugs and checking for condition.

What mileage is it?
