Title: Leads changed but still the same!!
Post by: megaomega123 on 27 February 2008, 16:21:47
I have changed leads on drivers bank as that is the side for concern. No difference in symptoms.
I had a feel of the cats and the drivers cat is very cool in comparison to the passenger cat.
Could this simply be a cat failure.
I have no money to throw at it in order to diagnose. I am basically getting a misfire at idle and up to about 4500 rpm then it is smoother but an obvious power drop.
Has anybody had 1 failed cat giving these symptoms?

Breathers, cam covers, spark plugs, leads, dispack can be any of or a combination of...

Work through those you havent done from least expensive to most - ie dispack last :y

Have you looked at (or better, replaced) the plugs on the drivers side bank? (How do you know its that side?)

Might indicate if its one or more cylinders misfiring.  Cat would affect all of them equally (I'm not sure it would lead to these symptoms anyway)

Cam covers, plugs and breathers are all freshly done. The only thing not done is passenger bank leads. I'll do those 2moro and see.

The only thing that gave me some doubt was the temperature difference between the 2 cats  :-/

If the driver's side cat is much cooler, that suggests those cylinders are not firing well.

You could try taking the downpipe off and run it very briefly.

How bad were the leads you changed? they may have damaged the DIS pack.

I'm suprised the engine would run at all if three cylinders are misfiring (depends how bad of course).  I would still inspect the plugs for unburnt fuel (wet or carbon deposits) on one or more cylinders.  Would be interesting to know if its the whole bank or just one cylinder.
