I crawled under the omega today to check the engine number.
This is what i found, where the engine meets the transmission.

B 1688 246467
Is this the actual engine number? I thought it should be without letters, and start with 08 :). It was glued on where the number should be stamped on the block.
If this isnt it, can I find the number anywhere else?
Thanks

Engine no can be found on the v6 on a flat face of the block next to the oil filter. it will start X30XE*******. :y

There is nothing there. Just this plate glued on, nothing under it.
My other omega has the number stamped on the block there, starts with x30xe. But not this one. Could the engine have been replaced from "something else"?

I should mention that both my omegas are imported from Germany, I live in Finland and I dont know what V5 is. :-?
But there is no engine number on the registration papers, just a manufacturing number.

Saab engines are called B301i right? But this says B 1688 in the beginning, so i suppose it isnt that either...
Anyone seen or heard of a Opel/Vauxhall engine with a similar badge instead of the numbers stamped on the block?
Car is a -95 model AT .

Well it looks like this thread will go into history as unsolved... :(
I would really need to know what that number means so I can buy a suitable cambelt.
Hasnt anyone really ever seen a badge like this?

why don't you take it to an Opel dealer and get a quote for the belt. They will be able to trace it somehow. Then make a note of it 'for future reference'

The V5 referred to is the registration document which has ownership details. It also has the 17 digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) which is also on a plate on the dashboard, visible through the windscreen, as well as the engine serial number in the UK.

I know, i looked there and found this tag glued on instead:

What botheres me the most is not knowing what it means, who put it there and why?
But Im pretty sure its a regular X30XE from 1995.

Simpl answer, the engine in your car isn't the orginal one. Looks like the car has had another engine fitted at some time in its life and from looking at the tag it wasn't a GM VX-PRO engine.
From what i can remember, and this is going back a few years now so it might have changed, but when someone/company rebuilds and engine and sell it on there is/was no legal requirment to issue it with an engine number.
A few years back a couple of big engine re-builder in the smoke were raided and had all the stock and tools seized because there wasn't any number on the engines they sold. It all went to court and it was ruled that they are not a legal requirment. I don't know if this is still the case though.
The GM engine numbers are in two sections, eg,
X30XE
The X = euro 2 regs
30 = engine size in CC
X = comprssion ratio 10 to 11.5:1
E= multi-point injection
The second part it the engine serial number and thats what we use it ID any changes made during manufracture.
With a non Genuine re-built engine the builder will grined off the OE number and stamp his owen build number on it for his records.
If your buying a car, they always say check the numbers against the log book, fair point regarding the Chassis number but all the engine number will tell you is if thats the orginal engine. If the numbers are different then you start asking questions
By giving a VX dealer the reg or chassis number he will only come up with the orginal number, its quite possible if its a pattern engine you could have a late car with an early spec engine or the other way round
Hope that sort of helps
Cheers
Andy
