Title: Handbrake
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 29 February 2008, 15:14:30
I plan to service my handbrake tomorrow in prep for the MOT - it holds the car, but comes up WAY to high.

I have read the Maint. guide by Mark which is great, but I have a couple of further questions...

How do you actually remove and refit the handbrake shoes? I know a spring(s) is involved, but that's about it.

Can you see if they are very worn without taking them out?

Will I just get away with adjusting the cable if it's slack or is that a bodge?

The brake holds fine - I just know the travel is way to high for the MOT next week...

goddamn it... i was looking at mine today and thinking the exact same thing, it hits the centre armrest when pulled up sharply and needs a tweak.... a how-to would be nice...

There is one...

I just need to clarify a couple of additional bits before I tackle it :y

I'm unclear about how the shoes go in and out mainly, inc the springs..  and where the pivot thingy is, that's all :y

I've had this set up on my cars for the best part of 15 years & I haven't ever had a disc/drum off to look!  :-?

It makes more sense now!!

I suspect it will look dead easy, once I get the disk off?

Do the shoes wear that much? Shall I just get some anyway, at £18??

Maybe worth taking a picture before you take anything off put some marks on the bits so if you do take anything off you can glance at the picture and make sure you are putting it back the same way  :y

Difficult to get wrong to be honest (say me, who's handbrake failed MOT TWICE after I played with it ::))

Biggest problem may well be the disc removal.  The handbrake shoes can wear a lip inside the drum portion which prevents removal, despite winding them as far back as possible.  If you insist on forcing the drum off, easy to break the friction material from the backplates.

Ask me how I know.....    :D

With the cable wound off and the centre adjuster wound right off then the disc should clear the shoes with no problem. :-/

It's easy enough but you must fully slacken off the shoes and cable.  Be prepared for some skinned knuckles though!  :'(

Also, it really helps loads the higher the car is, crawling around on gravel was damn painful!  ;)

Plus I should add that after 96k my shoes literally fell apart when I removed the hubs, luckily for me a mate took me to my 'local' factor 15 miles away for some new one's....
