Title: Oil Cooler Required?
Post by: Laz on 01 March 2008, 00:13:42
Evening all..
Just purchased a caravan and I have been advised that I should get an extra Oil cooler on my 02 2.2 Petrol saloon auto.
Is this good advice and if so how much should I expect to pay for it?

 Many thanks in advance

The advice from the garage was that an extra cooler would be adivsable, the van I got, although within the the weight tolerence is in the upper percientile of that tolerence.
But then again it was advice from a garage which by default has to be viewed with a certain amount of sceptism, so any advice from the experts would gratefully recieved.

It doesn't need an extra oil cooler - period.

Regular oil changes, throttle body and breathers cleaned, correct amount of anti freeze, and you won't have any problems.

I presume it's an auto?

What sort of mileage has it done?

Might be worth getting the autobox serviced, oil and filter change.

The 2.2 already has a small water/oil heat exchanger (just above the oil filter).......and the autobox already has an oil cooler....

Had one installed on mine costs iirc were:

autobox oil cooler kit about £75

Labour about £120 :involved removing radiator so that super slim oil cooler fits between it at air con condenser . blanking off  original auto oil cooler inputs in rad (oil cooler is simply a length of pipe in the radiator running between these two ) connecting new oil cooler to original pipe work and filling gearbox to correct level

Get your gearbox ecu checked for level of upgrade the latest ver 9 or 10 is ideal for when you tow stops that annoying changing gear in box when travelling about 50/60 ish
(Needs tech2((THE REAL ONE)) to be able to read box and upgrade ecu)

The car has done 40,000 and it is an auto, Would the autobox need a service?

A bit confusalated now, is advisable to get one or is bigall using the belt and braces approach?

 :P I Probably am  :-X
I have always used an additional oil cooler on autos that i tow with - just personal to me. Lots of members on here tow  without one - so suppose its a personal thing. My post was just to inform you of  prices

BUT I would certainly advise that you have the latest gearbox upgrade - vauxhall can do it for a price but see if anyone on this site  has a tech2 and is close to you.

As said, there already is a cooler and a water to oil verson is considerably more efficient than an oil to air so I realy wouldn't waste your cash.

It also has the added benefit of ensuring the oil maintains quite a constant temp (90 deg ish) which is perfect for good operation.

The oil air versions can realy over cool the oil when cruising at speed as most dont have a stat bypass in them.
