Title: Whinning noises
Post by: splott on 27 February 2008, 16:59:55

I have a whinning noise from the engine bay, (sounds like a supercharger- I wish! ).
The steering is a bit heavy at tick over and I get steering judder when breaking. Is this the power stearing pump, steering rack or both?
Any ideas?

Could be secondary air injection pump - see the "Noisy pump thingy" thread that was also posted today.

If it's not the secondary pump, that will only run for a few minutes after a cold start, try removing the auxiliary belt briefly.

If the noise goes check idler/tensioner bearing, alternator, coolant pump & hydraulic pump bearings.

I too have a whinning noise from the engine bay(drivers side front).  Had car checked by VX dealer - turned out to be a worn/broke bearing on the alternator.  Alternator still working fine and supplying correct charge so not to worried about it for now, due cambelt change in summer so will probebly replace then.  If people ask about the noise just say "its the supercharger"!!!!!
