Hi this is the first automatic car I have owned, the question I would like to ask is, when you come to heavy slow traffic and have to stop and then creep forward a bit at a time, do you have to put the car in neutral everytime you stop or is it ok to leave the car in drive(does it do any harm to the clutch). Or I suppose another way I could put it how long can you leave the car in drive without moving off?
Many thanks

I leave it in drive, tis half the joy of an automatic.
Read a report that suggested more harm than good is done by moving to neutral frequently
-
I was told the same (no N while stopping) but can anybody expain why?
-
I vaguely recall it from a doc provided by Auto Addict....

Thanks for your answers. I have also just typed the question into google and it seems I have been doing more harm than good by constantly putting it in neutral.
Cheers

You should use the handbrake though eg at traffic lights, both to keep the handbrake in good nick and to prevent your discs warping due to the heat. not to mention irritating the hell out of the guy behind with your brake lights constantly on in his face.

Handbrake? Which is that? ;) Mine have always gone into Park if I'm going to be stopped more than about 20 secs. Infact the light always seem to know when I've gone into Park as that's when they tend to change back! :y
Whether that's right or wrong, that's what I do. Besides as far as I was aware you're just generating heat in the 'box by sitting with your foot on the brake with it in Drive.

Handbrake use is an entirely different issue...
Some never touch them...
Some use them religously...you may not need to , but saves them seizing up and failing your mot and being expensive and awkward to fix!
My car will creep in drive, no brakes (and pointing up hill) The handbrake can (and does) hold this no problem.
It never used to, but a certain helpful admin fixed it for me :y

Can somebody explain why is that? Is it just a cooling system?

I have got into habit of knocking into neutral while waiting at lights could you please show the thread re putting in neutral or explain why it is differant to putting in park
cheers

Not a total answer to the question...
But,
http://www.familycar.com/Transmission.htm
Interesting? :y
Leave it in drive, use the handbrake or footbrake when stopped, keep at tickover, it's designed to bypass the hydraulic pressure at this output.. no probs... if you raise the revs to about 2300 rpm for example the transmission will go into stall mode... that's when the damage occurs.. that's only used when Autobox tech check the bands for lock up....
The above is from my limited knowledge and a little experience mechanicing with auto's...
Hope this helps..

Neutral is just that ie not in a driven gear. Park is the same re the driven gear bit but it also puts in pin into the gearbox somewhere (I've never opened one up to look) that physically locks the gearbox.
