Title: Temp gauge???
Post by: cbs2 on 19 February 2008, 21:02:47
Hey all

Replaced thermostat & flushed system last weekend.
Since then, my temp gauge hardly lifts off the rest & I struggle to get any heat from the heater.
Before I strip it down (again :'(), can anybody point me in the general direction what to look out for??

Hi,
You seem to have the correct part number. Same as the one I fitted anyway, and mines OK.

Suggest you may have a faulty one.

Is the output pipe to the radiator warming up slowly ? Should be cold for a while, then suddenly get hot as t/stat opens.

Before you take t/stat out again, when cold, take the hose off that goes on to the end of the transfer pipe and fit a spare piece of hose that fits tight, and see if you can blow air back through the thermostat. Mine closes so tight that you cannot blow through it.
If you can, it's not closing properly.
This is how I checked mine before I replaced it.

Got a similar problem on my 2.5 TD.

The heaters work fine, but the temperature guage barely moves. Only once has it gone up to a quarter - that was after waiting in a McDonalds drive-thru for over 20 minutes.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong, please?

Stat. Nice easy job on BMW engine, esp if you've done the sensible thing and removed that stupid viscous fan and rammed it up the stupid BMW designer's backside.

Rant over ;D

Thanks. I'll pop over to the motor factors, and then stop off at Boots for some K Y Jelly!
