Title: Clarification needed re: reversing light switch
Post by: humbucker on 04 March 2008, 16:24:46
My reversing lights stopped working, I changed the fuse, made no difference. Bulbs seem to be OK. I thought maybe it's the reversing light switch so called around to price 'em up, VX and aftermarket.

Most places told me that on a 3.0i AUTOMATIC Elite the switch is likely to be between 8 and 15 quid. Except one former VX franchise said that on auto's its a whole different kettle of fish and something about being an integral part of the gearbox costing £250 for the part.

Needless to say I'm a tad confused. I figure you knowledgable types would be a better bet... any ideas?!

Thanks in advance!

I think it's part of the selector switch for the auto gearbox. Not exactly integral to the gearbox but bolted to the side of it and it also provides information for the row of lights showing the gear position and tells the gearbox ECU what's going on.

These frequently go wrong following driving through floods so might be worth taking it off and drying it out / giving it a clean up before condemning it as the part is 100+ quid new.

Its part of the gearbox selector switch which bolts to the passenger side of the box......and they are not cheap so get one second hand or open yours up and check it out.

OK thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out as soon as I get a chance. One of the VX parts depts called back and confirmed it was part of gear selector switch too, and also confirmed how costly it is! I guess the others must have been quoting for manual box switches.

In the course of my investigation I was surprised to learn faulty reversing lights were not an MoT failure!

Yes I was told a few years back that if 1 light out of 2 is out it is a failure but if both out it isn't which is odd, its a bit like after market spot lights if both work or none work its fine but if only 1 works it will fail.
