Title: Coil per plug unit 3.2 L
Post by: Big_Roger on 05 March 2008, 19:44:40
Hi all,
Have been busy today changing camshaft cover gaskets and spark plugs etc.

Bit of a hiccup removing the coil per plug unit, bank 1-3-5 . The rubber seal incorporating the shroud around the contact spring from the unit to the plugs was stuck at the bottom around the plug insulator on one plug, and has parted and split. It's a bit fragile with the heat.

Enquiry at Vx dealer for replacement, they say it only comes as part of coil per plug unit, and quote circa £100.00 for replacement unit.

I can hardly believe that what is basically a plug cap is not available separately, it just pushes on to the unit. It has a number on it: 1220703015

Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know if they are available?

Roger

I did my cam cover gaskets on my 2.6l a while ago and 2 of the rubber shrouds stayed attached to the plugs when I removed the CPP unit. They were perfectly OK when I recovered them, so I would have thought it would be possible to obtain a good CPP unit with good shrouds from a scrappy. I would make more enquiries of other dealers too.
Examine the mounting 'domes' on the unit itself. Mine were cracked and looking the worse for wear, but I cleaned it up, sprayed the whole unit generously with WD40 and re-fitted it, with no problems whatsoever. I'd be tempted to re-use the plug covers if they're not actually falling apart, and the original CPP unit, perhaps even bodging the covers with adhesive tape if necessary. As you say, they're really only plug insulating covers. If you have no oil or water in the plug wells, you probably won't get any spark leakage.
Worth a try to save money, IMHO. And if it doesn't work out, it's not too bad a job to get to the plugs again.

Take the coil pask with you to the dealer and ask if he can check out the repair kits they have for the 4 and 3 pot engines to see if one of those fits.
