Title: How do you know you have ESP?
Post by: Ironingboard on 05 March 2008, 21:55:27
How can you tell if your car has ESP. I've seen loads of facelifts on ebay that say they have ESP and I'm wondering if my Elite has it.

Asked VX and they said they don't know since it doesn't show up on their EPC when they type my reg in.

Lol, its ESP in the very basic form on all mini fcaelift onwards V6 cars in as much as it does not use a yaw sensor....

Ah but when you check the Omega EPC there's a part for a yaw sensor, so I guess there is some thats fitted. Where would the yaw sensor be fitted, so I can go searching?

Don't think it was ever option on UK cars...

Looks to be 2.6/3.2 as it sits on the can bus, cant find the location for the sensor.

But, there is a basic ESP setup in the standard 4 way ABS unit....its crude though.

Me neither, no location given for yaw or steering angle sensor :(

You walk up to it on a cold morning and it is sitting there idling, nice and warm?  ::)

My manual talks about ESP being an option separate to traction control.

It is, but you could argue ABS is an electronic stability system.  Not a proper one of course...

Both my mercs had a button on the dash marked ESP.....if you pressed it a big warning triangle light came on......warning....you had turned off TC/ABS and another little device that determined if you were braking hard enough....if it thought not....it would brake for you.

Never seen an Omega with an ESP button  :-/

Interestingly i managed to crash one of my mercs........coz it took over the braking for me.......it just went for a slide into the rear of BMW convertible  ;D

Wierd sensation when the brake pedal just drops to the floor......when it takes over braking........

Tho i did considerable damage to my merc (still reckon i would have stopped in time under my control) the funny part was ...... the roll bars went off on the BMW.......punching two holes through his rag top  ;D ;D

I have lovely dreams about mercs and bmw's crashing into each other.

Just my sick and twisted mind I suppose.

Emergency Brake Assist.
I seem to remember Merc being on Watch Dog or similar cos a few owners considered that the EBA stepped in uneccessarily.

I always thought all facelift omegas had some form of stability control as well? Just 'hidden'?

What does it do in the mini facelift? In my car it has the traction control button, I've always assumed this just controls wheel spin by monitoring the wheel speeds - is this not the case?

yes, though it brakes individual wheels to control it.

I agree.  But could be classed as a very simple stability system, as it does apply brakes to rear wheels (post 98).

But without steering and direction sensors, cannot be classed as a true ESP.

I think some manufacturers call that EDL, electronic diff lock?  A more advanced TC, but not really stability control.  Friggin dangerous on a powerful FWD is what it is!  Melt your brakes coming out of one roundabout and find that you have none left at the next roundabout!  >:(

Working in Milton Keynes, I have no trouble killing the brakes without electronics helping me..... ;D

Just had a look at the manual for my Omega and it talks about ESP being an optional extra in addition to TC and ABS. The way it talks about it implies that it has a yaw sensor "detects understeer / oversteer".

In vehicles with ESP, the TC light and button have a symbol that looks like a triangle with a car swerving around inside it instead of the usual "TC" letters.

Anyone got it?

Kevin

As said above... I saw several German brochures mentioning that ESP will be optional on (very) late facelift, but it either never made it into production by the time the Omega was dropped, or if it was then it was never made available for UK cars....

Yes, its in the wiring diagrams as well.  Pretty certain it never made it in any Vauxhall Omega

not sure it was an opel option either  :-/

(folding?) mirrors are a requirement in some countries....

What's involved in fitting folding mirrors to a UK spec 3.2 elite facelift?

Is the wiring there, just an ingnition sensor in the mirror?

Would you retain the heating, " RHS wide angle split" and memory adjustment?

I suspect you could retain those items, but never seen it on a UK car, and seeing as the stdard Elite ones are several hundred £ each, I don't think its even worth the effort of checking what else needs to be done...

Point taken, but it won't cost anything to find out. You're probably right on actually doing it though. If it were a "project" I'd look at moving the side repeaters into them too.

Any ideas on which countries it was a legal requirement? Is this something that was done in Germany or on the US Catera?

Japan.

Japanese cars are right hand drive too aren't they? That might make things easier if they are available 2nd hand.

You don't read Japanese too do you? I zaw zat you are fluent in German  :y

Which "armrest"? Do you mean on the door card where the window switches are?

Is the switch your talking about for "folding" the mirrors or adjusting them?
