Title: Failed the MoT!

Hi all,

Was advised to post in this section so here goes......

I've owned my 1999 2.5TD CDX Estate for 6 years and 110,000 of its 138,000 miles.
Sadly, this week, it failed the MoT because the brake pedal slowly decends to the floor when pushed hard with the engine running. The same test performed with the engine switched off results in a solid(ish) pedal.
The MoT guy said "could be air bubbles - try bleeding" and "if it's not that , it's the ABS control unit = expensive".
I remember this as being the symptom of a faulty master cylinder or servo - anyone else have any ideas? Fluid level is OK - hasn't been using it.
Brake hydraulics were opened up last summer when the rear wheel bearing was changed - not by me though!

If it's the ABS controller, the cars dead - it needs its second new slush box as well!

Bleed brakes as a first.

How rapidly does it creep to floor?  Master cylinder seals can be a culprit.

I had similar on my tractor last weekend after I bled brakes, I'd got air in it.

If you can't find the air, find someone local with a real Tech2 (and knowledge to use it) to try to help pinpoint issue.

It sounds like classic air bubbles.....start by bleeding the brakes on the corner which has been buggered with.

Ow yes, often used by people who have to sort out other peoples cock up...

Hi,
I had this problem some years ago on a Senator. It was the master cylinder seals faulty. Just worn out and soft.

In those days you could get a repair kit.
That and a pressure brake bleed kit did the trick.

An auto box, you know the thing where the design is based around the same setup used in battery screwdrivers  :y

Wrong - battery screwdrivers are based on autoboxes, as its such an excellent design and idea ;D

Ohhhh ok lol well I have an AR35 box if you do repair it...should last a lot longer than fitting another AR25...

Absolutely essential to fit an AR35 to the TD when the original one fails...

Which is my my second box only lasted a few weeks ::)

Well, bled the brake 'till I'm blue in the face today, still exactly the same. I'll go for the master cylinder seals next - bet you can't get a repair kit!
Maybe the best answer is to buy another car cheap - just for the spares!

Now this is no help at all but.....

My brother's Daewoo Espero suffered the same problem. We bled the system thoroughly (pressure bled with about 5 litres of brake fluid). We found out how to bleed the ABS unit and bled that. Very little if any air came out on any of the bleeding operations.

Then he replaced the master cylinder and bled it all again.

Still not right, but just good enough to pass the MoT.

Still at a loss as to the root cause. We're thinking duff replacement master cylinder or some kind of servo problem.

Needs Tech 2?  Enlighten me....  does the tech operate the pump / valves etc.... Read this on several posts...  never really thought about it until now :-/
