Title: 'Jiggling' steering wheel and gear lever........
Post by: Neil_MV6 on 11 March 2008, 10:50:26
This is a difficult problem to describe, but I'll try.....

When I bought my 2002 MV6 last year, the front shocks were shot and were replaced with genuine Vx MV6 ones.  My problem is, when driving in general and particularly over small road imperfections i.e. manhole covers or rough road surfaces, I can feel it all vibrating through the steering wheel and can see/hear the gearlever vibrating also as if there's no damping at all.

When I drive to my local park I go over a cattle grid which sends the steering wheel into a frenzy, jiggling left and right very quickly.  I recently drove up a potholed drive and the steering wheel was jumping from left to right quite furiously.

I've just replaced a knocking drop link which has improved things a little, but what else could be causing this?

I have a sneaking suspicion that my car could be ex plod as there was a sticker on the dash when I bought it which said 'this car may be fitted with options above and beyond the standard specification'.

I think a new steering idler is needed, my rear shocks need doing and there is slight play in one of the front hubs (all on my to-do list).

I know all of the above could contribute but I wondered if anything springs to mind that could be the major root cause?

In comparison, my old '97 3.0 elite was very refined and I felt nothing like this even over the roughest surfaces.

Any suggestions appreciated.   :-/

My money would be on wishbone bushes....

Thanks, someone else suggested wishbones.

Can you replace just the bushes or do you need to replace the whole wishbones?

They actually look quite new compared to the other suspension components.  Is there a way to check other than visually?

Is it white with blue lights and a high vis jacket on the back shelf!?!  ;D

Seriously, post some pictures up and we should be able to tell you whether it's plod or not, I think you would know yourself. Tell tale signs are calibrated speedo, old shape steering wheel and armrest (on new shape car), incorrect wheels/tyres. GLS style plain grey dash surround (not official carbon fibre look MV6) and the biggies, perhaps manual gearbox and irregular panel gaps (only available on police spec!).

Hope you get your suspension woes sorted mate, though at 155k it could be ready for a little tlc and tickling underneath  ;)

There are no tell-tale signs other than the mysterious sticker that was on the clear cover on the dials.  You can see it in the first picture, just inside the top left (10:30) of the steering wheel rim.

The car is metallic blue and has leather recaro style seats, MV6 wheels and auto box, so no other signs.

Maybe it was a CID or ex diplomatic car???  Is there anything on the springs that could identify whether they are standard?
