What car do you have mate? 4 cylinder (2.0/2.2) or V6 (2.5,2.6,3.0,3.2) (assume not diesel for some reason..)
that's critical to the answer....

If its a 2.0/2.5/3.0 petrol
Then its the idle control valve, someone will post a pic...
Give this a good clean.
And remember we can not read minds.... how on earth do we know what engine is in your car? remember to post basic details, not just the fault!

If its a 2L it needs more than ICV clean, but lets confirm what it is first.
..and go easy on him tunnie. not everyone knows how significantly different the engines are :y

sorry people its a 2.0 petrol eco tec n reg. ive ajusted the idle nut couple of turns that seems to have sorted the problem for now but my neautral tick over is just over 1000rpm altho this drops when drive is engaged. is that harmful?
-
Idle is now to high. Remove the IACV and clean it, also yoiu will need to clean the breather pipes too.
Once all that is done you will need to adjust that screw back to where it was before you tampered with it.

Put that back were it was, and sort out the ICV. Fix the fault, not bodge the symptoms ;)

You are right , this is a very common problem on 2.0 cars.
Its an easy enough job but you need to do it thoroughly (not just clean the ICV - the breather hoses, throttle body AND the metal nozzle under the throttle body which will be blocked solid all need a good clean). When you have done that the car will seem like a different beast :y

icv sounds about right good soak overnight sorted mine out but i changed the crank sensor at the same time

Is this a problem that causes this type of symptom on a 3.2 V6 also or are there a host of other causes on that engine?

There is no idle control valves on the 3.2, so to cause it to stall will most likley be an air leak someware, or seriously blocked breathers!

Crank sensor is one of the most likely culprits for a 3.2 to stop / stall as the inlet system on the 3.2/2.6 cars is much simpler.
