Title: New front brakes = wobbling steering when braking?
Post by: Neil_MV6 on 14 March 2008, 17:10:45
Just replaced front discs & pads with Mintex items off Ebay (£56 + postage).  The improvement is immediately noticeable, even without wearing them in, the initial bite and performance is superb.  Old discs were very, very corroded on inside edge (looked fine from the outside) but one thing that surprised me was the pads still had a good 5mm on them but the brake pad sensor had already worn?

Also the steering wheel is wobbling considerably more than before under braking.  Am I right in thinking this is probably wishbones?  I thought it might have been a warped disc but obviously not.  :y

I assume there is no grit trapped between the disc and hub?

As for the wear sensor, it needs repalcing if its worn or short the two wires out that connect to it to remove the alarm.

With new discs and pads any steering wobble should be reduced. Be very careful to allow the new brakes to 'bed in' before any 'Big Stopping' manoeuvres as it will cause 'hot spots' on the new discs, this results in f----d front brakes that judder and cause steering wheel to wobble.  :-[ :-[

In my experience wishbones fail regularly on Omegas and a common symptom is judder when braking, especially when coming down slip roads off motorways.

So I'd say check your wishbones - although the failure may be hard to see until the wishbone is removed.

Have you got access to a 'clock gauge'/ Dial Test Indictor? That way you'd know for certain if your new discs are to blame or not. You'd need to bolt your discs up using the wheel bolts before you checked.

It is very rare for 'brake discs' to actually 'warp', the problem is that the steel disc, after braking to a stand still, is then clamped by the pads, this transfer of immense heat to just that area can change the surface metallic structure of the steel disc, this tends to effect automatics more as drivers tend not to use there handbrake. Once this has occured, normally after new brakes have been fitted and have been given a good hammering there 'scrap'. It is always worth replace brakes with Vauxhall parts (at TC prices) and treat them gently for the first few days.

Thanks for the advice.

One extra point to make, the juddering only happens when the brakes are applied lightly during the initial bite, further increased pressure on the pedal makes it go and all feels fine.

If I only brake lightly, the juddering continues? At speed it is VERY apparent.

Sounds like the wishbone bushes, the improved performance of the brakes is showing it up even more, when you brake hard it puts weight on the bushes and takes any play out, when you only brake lightly the play in the bushes is still there. Hope this makes sense  :y
